A pet dog named Bear had a miraculous escape after being trapped underground for about 60 hours in a park in Aberdeen, Scotland. The Cavapoo went missing during a walk on Thursday and was only found on Sunday after his owner was led to the hole by another dog.
Embed from Getty ImagesBear’s owner, Dasha Samatoina, 29, who was visiting Aberdeen from London, said she was terrified by the thought of him being down there in the cold and dark. She had been walking Bear with a friend’s dog, Lola, when her pet disappeared. It is thought they both went down the hole but Bear, who is bigger than Lola, was unable to get out.
After a couple of days searching, they were advised to let Lola guide them to Bear as she might hear him whining or barking. “And that’s exactly what happened,” Ms. Samatoina said. “She led us to one of the holes on a site we had not properly looked at and she was very persistent to go down the hole.”
Ms. Samatoina called Bear’s name until he was able to dig his way to freedom. She said she was relieved after being reunited with her five-year-old pet who she feared she might never see again. “It is amazing how strong he is to be able to dig himself out after three days with no food or water,” she said.
The dog spent the night at vets where he was treated for sand in his eyes, scratches to his nose and given fluids as he was dehydrated. The vets were shocked that he was fine, Ms. Samatoina said.
Bear’s story is not the only one of a dog being rescued from an underground cave. In August, a team of spelunkers in Missouri found a 13-year-old dog named Abby who had been missing for almost two months and was 500 feet below the surface. They used a duffel bag and a blanket to carry her out of the cave system.
In April, another terrier named Flossie was stuck underground for 56 hours in England before she was pried from the earth in a dramatic rescue video. Her owner Poppy Vernon posted the clip on TikTok and thanked everyone who helped save her dog.
