Jennifer Lawrence is back on the big screen with a hilarious and heartfelt performance in ‘No Hard Feelings’, a comedy film that follows her character Maddie, an Uber driver who agrees to date an awkward teenager for money.
The film, which opened on June 23, earned $6.25 million on its opening day, beating expectations. It also received positive reviews from critics and audiences, who praised Lawrence’s comedic timing and chemistry with her co-star Andrew Barth Feldman, who plays Percy, the sheltered 19-year-old son of two helicopter parents.
Lawrence, who also produced the film, said she loved playing a “messy and chaotic” character who is far from perfect. “I love playing messy and chaotic characters. I think they’re more fun and more real,” she told The Washington Post.
The film is directed by Gene Stupnitsky, who also co-wrote the script with John Phillips and produced the film with Lawrence and others. Stupnitsky, who is known for his work on ‘The Office’ and ‘Good Boys’, said he wrote the film with Lawrence in mind. “She’s one of the few movie stars who can do anything,” he said.
The film also stars Matthew Broderick as Percy’s father, Laura Benanti as his mother, plus Natalie Morales, Hasan Minhaj, Kyle Mooney and more. The film is rated R for crude sexual content, language throughout and some drug use.
The film puts a twist on the classic romantic comedy trope of an irresponsible man who falls in love with a woman and changes his ways. But what if that man was a woman? That’s the question that ‘No Hard Feelings’ explores, as Maddie tries everything to sleep with Percy, from skinny dipping to kidnapping him in a van.
The film is full of hilarious moments and witty dialogue, such as when Maddie asks Percy at a dog adoption center, “Mind if I touch your wiener?” before revealing he’s holding a Dachshund wiener dog.
But the film also has heart and depth, as Maddie and Percy develop a genuine connection and learn from each other. The film also touches on themes of family, friendship and self-esteem.
In a world over-saturated by superhero films, ‘No Hard Feelings’ is the summer comedy that’s got everything: laughs, heart, and JLaw.
