Steve Bannon, the former advisor to President Trump, has been ordered to report to prison by July 1 to serve his four-month sentence for contempt of Congress, a conviction that has further inflamed the already high tensions within the MAGA movement and across the broader political landscape.
The order by U.S. District Judge Carl J. Nichols, who sentenced Bannon in October 2022, comes after federal prosecutors argued that no significant legal questions remained following the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit’s rejection of Bannon’s appeal last month. Bannon’s conviction stems from his defiance of a subpoena issued by the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Justice Department, however, argues that Bannon’s appeals were rejected conclusively, and that there is no longer a ‘substantial question of law that is likely to result in a reversal or an order for a new trial’. As such, the judge’s ruling follows the precedent set by the judicial system for individuals held in contempt of court.
The political fallout from Bannon’s sentencing is likely to continue as the date for his prison report nears. Bannon’s defiance of the subpoena and the court’s response have highlighted the ongoing conflict between Trump loyalists and the legislative and judicial processes. The situation remains fluid as Bannon’s lawyers have until June 24 to request a rehearing before the full D.C. Circuit, and there is still the possibility that the Supreme Court may be petitioned to intervene.
