The healthcare industry could undergo a transformation thanks to the emergence of AI-driven “compassionate healthcare agents” following a groundbreaking alliance between AI computing giant Nvidia and healthcare startup Hippocratic AI. These next-generation “agents” promise to provide not only mission efficiencies but also human-like interactions, helping to alleviate America’s critical shortage of health care workers.
Nvidia’s entry into the healthcare field has been supported by a series of strategic partnerships. Its recent collaboration with Hippocratic AI highlights a shared vision: to build AI healthcare agents that outperform human nurses in performance and cost.
“Voice-based digital agents powered by generative AI can usher in an age of abundance in health care, but only if the technology responds to patients as a human would,” Kimberly Powell, Nvidia’s vice president of health care, said.
In fact, the testing phase has already produced promising results. There are 1,000 registered nurses and 100 licensed physicians evaluating the robots, and the data is telling—these AI agents outperform humans in a range of tasks, such as identifying the impact of drugs on lab values and Testing toxic doses of over-the-counter drugs.
The appeal of these drugs is further amplified by their cost-effectiveness. At $9 an hour, they represent a fraction of the usual cost for human nurses, a factor that cannot be ignored in a healthcare system struggling with budget constraints.
But it’s not just about the bottom line. As Munjal Shah, CEO of Hippocratic AI, highlights,”We’re working with NVIDIA to continue refining our technology and amplify the impact of our work of mitigating staffing shortages while enhancing access, equity, and patient outcomes.”The efficacy of these robots in connecting with patients on an emotional level was supported by responses from nurses, with a high proportion of people feeling comfortable confiding in the AI and feeling that the AI cared about them.
This integration of AI in healthcare is part of the larger trend of digital transformation. NVIDIA’s suite of healthcare microservices, now integrated with GE Healthcare, Microsoft and others. These services include advanced imaging, natural language and speech recognition, and digital biology simulations. The company says its AI microservices can be used to screen for trillions of drug compounds to advance medicine, gather better patient data to aid early disease detection and implement smarter digital assistants.
These generative AI agents from Hippocratic AI stand on the shoulders of Nvidia’s cutting-edge technology stack, enabling ultra-low-latency conversational interactions. The companies demonstrated the potential of generative AI healthcare agent avatars using Nvidia’s Avatar Cloud Engine technology suite, which brings digital humans to life through generative AI. Agents call patients by phone, follow up on care coordination tasks, provide preoperative guidance and perform post-discharge management.
