March 15, 2024 Gallup Poll Reveals Shift in Russian Willingness to Fight Amid Ukraine Conflict

    Published on

Amid the backdrop of a protracted conflict in Ukraine, a recent Gallup poll indicates a significant shift in the Russian populace’s willingness to fight for their country, diverging from the resolute commitment seen in Ukraine. The polling suggests a decline in Russian enthusiasm for combat when compared to figures from a decade ago, revealing the complex societal response to ongoing hostilities.

In contrast, the same polling firm’s surveys in Ukraine depict a nation largely steadfast in its pursuit of victory. Approximately 60% of Ukrainians, according to a July-August survey, express a desire for their country to persist in the conflict until it achieves triumph. This figure, though slightly diminished from a previous high of 70%, signals a majority support that aligns closely with the unwavering stance of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose approval rating soars at 81%.

Ukrainian morale is buttressed by near-universal confidence in their military, with a staggering 95% of citizens expressing trust in their armed forces. This faith is mirrored in the collective vision of victory, which, for an overwhelming 91%, equates to the restoration of territories lost since 2014, including Crimea.

The evolution of Russian public opinion, however, paints a different picture. It has been observed that sentiments are not static and that there are concentric circles of support for what the Kremlin refers to as the “special military operation.” The outer rings represent those with weak or conditional support, indicating nuances behind the apparent consensus.

The Gallup poll was released shortly after the two-year anniversary of the Ukraine war, which began with Putin’s full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022. A total of 46,138 individuals were surveyed globally by Gallup. The interviews were conducted in each country with a representative sample of approximately 1000 men and women from October to December 2023, either in person, over the phone, or online. The survey has a margin of error ranging from +3-5% at a 95% confidence level.

Previous polls indicate a significant decrease in public support for the conflict. In November 2023, a survey by Russia’s Levada Center, an independent research organization in Moscow, revealed that 70% of Russians would back Putin if he chose to end the conflict. The Levada Center polled 1,608 individuals across Russia from October 19 to October 25. However, when asked if ending the war meant Russia giving back the territories it has occupied and annexed during the conflict, only 34% of respondents said they would support such a decision.

The cessation of hostilities appears to be distant at present. Ukraine continues to endure attacks from both ground and air until a resolution is reached. The number of personal losses grows daily, with more soldiers being honored under flags as they are laid to rest. Despite this, the majority of the populace remains steadfast, eagerly anticipating the victorious end of the war.

In terms of public readiness for peace talks, the sentiment is split. While around half of the polled individuals would prefer a ceasefire, a significant portion concurrently endorses military engagement. Moreover, nearly one-fifth of Russians are unwavering proponents of war, oftentimes corresponding to retirement-aged men content with the status quo and distant from the personal risks of combat.

In essence, the Gallup polls offer a contrasting glimpse into two societies bound by war: Ukrainian unity and resolve facing Russian ambivalence and resignation. While Ukrainian citizens largely stand behind their military and leadership, navigating the daily ramifications of the war, Russians exhibit a spectrum of attitudes ranging from fervent support to reluctant acquiescence, shaped by government narratives and the perceived existential confrontation with the West.
