Less than a fortnight since the conclusion of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, Larry David shared his candid sentiments at PaleyFest’s star-studded event.
During the panel moderated by Judd Apatow, David reflected on the aftermath of the show’s culmination, divulging that he spent “a week of basking” in the positive response. “Honestly I was kind of blown away at the response to the finale, yeah,” David revealed. “It exceeded my wildest expectations; of course, I never have expectations for anything.” When prodded about whether he perused the reviews, he playfully remarked, “Only if they’re good, yes.”
Apatow asked if David had read reviews of the Seinfeld finale and the David noted he had read a couple, and “at the time, I think it did bother me” that were some negative reactions. However, the ribbing from Seinfeld himself, suggesting that the final ‘Curb’ episode was “26 years in the making,” was met with David’s humorously retort, which the audience received with roaring laughter.
The conversation, which also included Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, Cheryl Hines, and J.B. Smoove, veered towards the term “cringe comedy,” a label that David has openly expressed disdain for. He stated, “When people call it cringe comedy, I want to wring their necks.” Apatow’s mention of a cringe-inducing scene was met with David’s baffled counter, “I don’t understand how that’s cringeworthy.”
Memorable guest stars and a tribute to the late Richard Lewis were interspersed throughout the evening. Hines reminisced about her times of cautioning David against certain jokes, to which he wittily replied, “I kept waiting to get canceled, I guess. I was a little disappointed that I didn’t.”
“It was the most fun I could ever have possibly had doing anything, anything. To do that, to write it and then film it — I can’t imagine how I could ever have had more fun in my life,” he confessed.
Before the event, Jeff Schaffer shared insights into the broader reaction to the show’s finale, underlining that David and Seinfeld were both pleased with it. He revealed, “The reaction tells us that we ended at the right time, in the right way.” Schaffer also revealed that he “got a wonderful very sweet email from Jerry and I got an amazing, sweet email from Julia [Louis-Dreyfus] the next day too, which was great. They loved it,”
