Russian propagandists have unleashed a fierce tirade against the United States, decrying what they perceive as a betrayal following the House’s approval of a significant U.S. aid package to Ukraine. The aid, which includes $61 billion of foreign assistance and a measure to sell frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine’s war efforts, has been a point of contention, and its advancement by U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has triggered sharp criticism from Moscow’s top media figures.
During a broadcast of “Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov,” which features Russia’s leading propagandist Vladimir Solovyov, the host expressed grave concerns over the escalation of tensions with NATO and the implications of the U.S. aid package on the conflict in Ukraine. Solovyov stated, “We are dealing with a cunning, systematic, and extremely brutal enemy. It’s not about negotiations. It’s either us or them.” He added: “What is interesting is how Biden totally broke Trump and his supporters. He utterly destroyed them! This is Biden’s unequivocal, brutal victory because, in return, he did not give anything to Republicans.”
The fury extended to personal attacks, with Solovyov calling out Speaker Johnson for his pivotal role in advancing the aid package, which was seen as a sign of betrayal by the propagandists. Solovyov exclaimed, “Biden achieved everything! He apparently used backstage methods to lure to his side the man whom the Republicans chose to represent the House [Speaker Johnson]. He betrayed them! He totally betrayed them! Not us, we have no friends there.”
The resentment from Russian media was not solely directed at Speaker Johnson. U.S. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene received praise from Margarita Simonyan, head of RT, who described her as “a real beauty” for her stance against the U.S. aid to Ukraine. However, the same propagandists previously mocked Greene until her rhetoric aligned more closely with Russian interests.
Russian television and state media have a history of inciting discord and promoting propaganda to advance their geopolitical goals. Portraying the U.S. as a “deceitful and ruthless enemy” and glorifying individuals like Greene who oppose the U.S. government’s backing of Ukraine.
The substantial U.S. aid package has triggered resentment in Moscow, signaling ongoing Western assistance for Ukraine and creating a major obstacle for Russia’s operations in the area. The propaganda-driven backlash reveals a combination of indignation and urgency, as U.S. support to Ukraine directly undermines the Kremlin’s hopes for a quick and definitive triumph.
