In a Significant Move, Biden Approves Bill Extending Aid to Ukraine and Placing TikTok’s Future in Jeopardy

    Published on

President Joe Biden cemented both a substantial aid package for Ukraine and a potential expiration date for TikTok in the United States. The $95 billion aid bill, a testament to months of political wrangling, pledges nearly $61 billion to Ukraine for military support, marking a continued commitment to the country’s defense against Russian aggression. Simultaneously, the inclusion of a clause aimed at the popular social media platform TikTok has raised both eyebrows and stakes.

In a statement after the signing, Biden heralded the bill as a “good day for America, a good day for Ukraine and a good day for world peace,” emphasizing the role of the United States in fostering global security. The aid package, Biden said, is “going to make America safer. It’s going to make the world safer. And it continues America’s leadership in the world.” The package arrives against a backdrop of intense debate and pressure from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, serving to reinforce the U.S.’s position as a bulwark against Russian military advances.

The tangible outcomes of the aid package are immediate and potent, with the Pentagon announcing a $1 billion aid package for Ukraine moments after the bill’s signing. The provision to Ukraine includes air-defense systems, artillery, and tactical vehicles, underlining the urgency of the situation as Biden notes that Russia has “been responsible for a brutal campaign against Ukraine,” resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands.“They’ve killed tens of thousands of Ukrainians,” Biden said, “bombed hospitals … kindergartens, grain silos, tried to plunge Ukraine into a cold dark winter.”

However, buried within this significant foreign aid move is the ticking clock set for TikTok, a platform with a massive American user base and a central role in modern political campaign strategies. Despite the looming threat of a ban, Biden’s own campaign team has committed to continue using TikTok to reach voters, highlighting the platform’s pervasive influence and popularity, particularly among the younger demographic. An official from Biden’s campaign stated, “When the stakes are this high in the election, we are going to use every tool we have to reach young voters where they are. We are using enhanced security measures.”

Notably, the aid bill also allots $26 billion to Israel, a point of contention leading to a split vote among Democrats, and $8 billion to Indo-Pacific allies. Senators Bernie Sanders and others opposed further funding of Israel’s military operations, casting a spotlight on the divergent opinions within the party. Sanders bluntly criticized the allocation for Israel on social media, stating, “No more money for [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s war machine.”

The bill grants ByteDance 270 days to divest TikTok, a timeline that may extend to a full year with a presidential extension. This strategic deadline avoids the 2024 election season, guaranteeing the app’s continued operation during a politically crucial time.
