In an almost cinematic twist of fate, an emergency slide from a Boeing aircraft washed ashore right in front of the home of Jake Bissell-Linsk, a New York attorney involved in a class action lawsuit against the very same aerospace giant, Boeing. The unusual discovery occurred at Belle Harbor, Queens, where the deflated yellow slide became entangled in the rocks along the Atlantic Ocean’s edge.
Bissell-Linsk, of the law firm Labaton Keller Sucharow, is co-leading a suit which accuses Boeing of prioritizing profits over safety, leading to lax quality control and a series of high-profile manufacturing mishaps.
The slide, part of a Delta Boeing 767 jetliner, detached shortly after take-off from JFK Airport on a flight destined for Los Angeles. Delta confirmed the retrieval of the slide, stating, “We appreciate their professionalism and our customers’ patience for the delay in their travels.”
The serendipity of the situation was not lost on Bissell-Linsk, who mused, “Our case is all about safety issues at Boeing, and this slide is literally right in front of my house.” While this event may seem minor in isolation, it is yet another emblem of the ongoing scrutiny facing Boeing. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been investigating numerous safety concerns related to Boeing’s aircraft, including issues with tires, cabin pressure, and engine complications.
Boeing’s leadership has felt the impact, with the company’s CEO and two other executives announcing their resignations, while the firm reported a $355 million loss for the first quarter as safety overhauls take precedence.
As the attorney took photographs of the beached slide and Delta personnel retrieved it, the legal team at Labaton Keller Sucharow deliberated on the relevance of this incident to their ongoing case. “We haven’t decided if the slide is relevant to our case,” Bissell-Linsk stated. Nevertheless, the discovery could symbolically underscore the safety concerns at the heart of the lawsuit.
The firm represents shareholders who bought Boeing stock during a period when the company was asserting its dedication to safety, subsequent to the 737 MAX crashes and before the Alaska Air door incident. The suit is consolidated with others and is anticipated to file an amended complaint soon.
