A single mom in Australia was moved to tears by a stranger’s act of kindness at a Woolworths supermarket. The mom, identified only as Ree, was struggling to pay for her groceries due to the rising cost of living and personal issues. She had to put back some items that she couldn’t afford at the checkout, but the woman behind her offered to pay for them.

The incident highlights the financial hardship that many Australians are facing amid the pandemic and inflation. According to The Salvation Army, 93% of people who use its services are struggling to afford basic living necessities, and more than three-quarters are living below the poverty line.
The story also sparked an outpouring of support and empathy from social media users, who praised the stranger’s generosity and offered to help Ree and other single moms in need. Some also shared their own experiences of receiving or giving help at supermarkets.
