A couple from Tennessee had a dream come true when they got engaged on a beach in South Carolina, thanks to the help of a teenage boy with a metal detector.
Matt and Grace, who did not reveal their last names, were vacationing in Myrtle Beach on July 4, when Matt decided to pop the question to his girlfriend of three years. He had planned to surprise her with a ring that he had hidden in his pocket.
However, things did not go as planned when Matt realized that he had lost the ring in the sand before he could get down on one knee. He panicked and searched frantically for the precious item, but it was nowhere to be found.
“I was crying, I was scared. I thought it was over,” Grace said.
Matt did not give up and sought help from the police and a police dog named Goggles, who were patrolling the beach. They tried to sniff out the ring, but they could not locate it either.
Meanwhile, a 15-year-old boy from Ohio, Isaiah, who was on vacation with his family, noticed the commotion and decided to lend a hand. He had brought his metal detector with him to the beach, hoping to find some treasures.
He approached Matt and asked him if he was looking for a ring. Matt said yes and Isaiah started to scan the area with his device. After about 10 minutes of searching, he heard a beep and dug up the sand. To his delight, he found the missing ring and handed it over to Matt.
“He came up to me and he’s like, ‘Are you looking for a ring?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah.’ And he’s like, ‘Is this it?’ And he opened his hand and I just started bawling,” Matt said.
“I was just so happy for them. They seemed like really nice people,” Isaiah said.
Matt and Grace were overjoyed and grateful to Isaiah for his help. Matt finally proposed to Grace and she said yes. They hugged Isaiah and thanked him profusely.
“He’s our hero. There’s no way I can repay him for what he did,” Matt said.
Isaiah joked that he hoped they would name their first son after him.
The couple said they will never forget their beach proposal and the teenager who saved it. They plan to keep in touch with Isaiah and invite him to their wedding.
“I hope they name their first kid after me,” Isaiah said.
