The wildfires that swept across Maui last week have left a trail of devastation and death in their wake, especially in Lahaina, a historic town and tourist destination on the west coast of the island. The fires, which started on August 7 and burned for four days, killed at least 55 people and destroyed more than 600 homes and buildings in Lahaina, according to officials. The death toll may rise further as search and rescue teams continue to look for missing people.
The fires were fueled by dry conditions, strong winds and a buildup of fuel from invasive plants and trees that had not been cleared for decades. The flames quickly spread across more than 20,000 acres of land, reaching the outskirts of Lahaina, a town that dates back to the 18th century and was once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Lahaina is known for its historic sites, such as the Banyan Tree Park, the Baldwin Home Museum and the Wo Hing Temple, as well as its art galleries, shops and restaurants.
Thousands of people were evacuated from west Maui, some by jumping into the ocean or taking boats to escape the flames. Many residents lost everything they owned and are now staying in shelters or with relatives.
Governor Josh Green said the inferno that reduced much of Lahaina to smoldering ruins was the worst natural disaster in the state’s history, making thousands of people homeless and leveling as many as 1,000 buildings.
“It’s going to take many years to rebuild Lahaina,” Green said told a news conference, as officials began to map out a plan to shelter the newly homeless in hotels and tourist rental properties. Governor Josh Green has announced a state of emergency and expressed his intention to reconstruct Lahaina according to the state’s own vision and principles. He projected that the process of recovery would be lengthy, spanning several years, and would require a substantial financial investment reaching billions of dollars.
Maui County said in a statement that the Lahaina fire was 80% contained, as firefighters secured the perimeter of the wild land areas that burned.
The Pulehu fire, about 20 miles (30 km) east of Lahaina, was 70% contained. There was no estimate for the Upcountry fire in the center of the eastern mass of the island, Maui County said.
This summer, there have been frequent instances of severe destruction caused by fire in various parts of the world. The wildfires, which are often triggered by extremely high temperatures, have resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of individuals in Greece, Spain, Portugal, and other European regions. In western Canada, an unusual and severe outbreak of fires has caused widespread smoke that has spread across large areas of the United States, causing air pollution.
Scientists have been cautioning for a while now that human-induced climate change, which is fueled by the use of fossil fuels, is leading to more frequent and severe extreme weather events. They emphasize the urgent need for countries to reduce their emissions in order to avoid a climate disaster.
