How Grindr is more than just a hookup app for some users

    Published on

Grindr is an LGBTQ+ dating app that is known for facilitating instant hookups. However, the company claims that about 25% of its users also use the app to network and find professional opportunities. Grindr’s CEO, George Arison, said he personally hired or developed professional relationships with several people he met on the app.

5 Ways Grindr ls More Than Just a Dating App

“I think people are surprised when they find out that I have hired people through Grindr. I have also developed professional relationships with people I met on Grindr,” Arison told Business Insider.

Grindr has a feature that allows users to indicate that they are looking for networking, but some users are skeptical or confused about what that means. Despite the app’s reputation, some users have found friends, mentors, and freelance work through Grindr.

One user, who preferred to remain anonymous, said he found a mentor who helped him with his career in journalism. He said he was initially hesitant to use Grindr for networking, but he decided to give it a try after seeing the feature on the app.

“I was surprised by how many people were actually open to networking on Grindr. It was not easy to find them, but once I did, they were very helpful and supportive,” he said.

Another user, who also wished to remain anonymous, said he found a freelance graphic design job through Grindr. He said he was looking for casual dates, but he stumbled upon a profile that said “looking for a designer”. He decided to message the person and they agreed to work together.

“It was a bit weird at first, but we managed to keep it professional. He paid me well and gave me good feedback. It was a win-win situation,” he said.

However, not everyone is happy with Grindr’s networking feature. Some users feel that it is misleading or inappropriate to use a dating app for professional purposes. They argue that Grindr should focus on its core function of connecting people for romance.

“Grindr is not LinkedIn. It’s a hookup app. If you want to network, go to a different platform. Don’t mix business with pleasure,” one user commented on Reddit.

Grindr’s networking feature also raises some ethical and legal questions. The app has been facing a lawsuit from its users who allege that the app shared their personal data, including HIV status and location, with third-party advertisers without their consent.

Grindr ever said: “Grindr is confident that our approach to user privacy is first-in-class among social applications with detailed consent flows, transparency, and control provided to all of our users. For example, Grindr has retained valid legal consent from all of our EEA users on multiple occasions. We most recently required all users to provide consent (again) in late 2020 to align with the GDPR Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) version 2 which was developed by the IAB EU in consultation with the UK ICO.

Grindr’s ownership has also been a source of controversy. The app was sold to a Chinese gaming company, Kunlun Tech, in 2018, but the US government forced it to sell the app in 2020 due to national security concerns.

“It allows anybody who is running the network or who can monitor the network — such as a hacker or a criminal with a little bit of tech knowledge, or your ISP or your government — to see what your location is,” Cooper Quintin, senior staff technologist and security researcher at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, told BuzzFeed News.

“It can put people in danger, and it feels like an invasion of privacy,” a Grindr user said.

The app”s privacy policy states: “You may also have the option to provide information concerning health characteristics, such as your HIV status or Last Tested Date. Remember that if you choose to include information in your profile, and make your profile public, that information will also become public.”

Grindr is one of the most popular and influential LGBTQ+ apps in the world. It has more than 27 million users across 190 countries. It has also been credited with advancing LGBTQ+ rights and visibility in many parts of the world. However, it also faces many challenges and criticisms from its users and regulators. Whether it can balance its hookup culture with its networking feature remains to be seen.
