X charges new users $1/year to post: A bold move or a bad idea?

    Published on

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has made a surprising announcement: it will start charging new users in New Zealand and the Philippines a $1 annual fee to access basic features such as posting, liking, replying, reposting and bookmarking posts. The test program, called “Not a Bot”, is part of X’s efforts to crack down on bots and spammers, as well as to generate revenue for the platform.

Marketing Expert Breaks Down Why Twitter Needed More Than Just A Rebrand To X

X owner Elon Musk, who acquired the platform in 2022, said in a statement that the fee is necessary to deter the creation of fake accounts and improve the quality of the platform. “We want to make X a more authentic and meaningful place for people to connect and share their thoughts. By charging a nominal fee, we hope to discourage bots and spammers from creating fake accounts and cluttering the platform with low-quality content,” he said.

The fee does not apply to existing users or verified accounts, and users who do not pay can still read posts and follow accounts. However, some potential users are not happy with the new policy. Maria Santos, from the Philippines, said she thinks it’s unfair that X is charging for something that used to be free. “I don’t want to pay for a service that I’m not sure I’ll use regularly. I think X is losing its appeal and popularity,” she said.

On the other hand, some new users are willing to pay the fee and support X’s initiative. James Smith, from New Zealand, said he is happy to pay $1 a year for X. “I think it’s a reasonable price for a platform that offers me a lot of value and entertainment. I also appreciate that X is trying to improve its quality and security. I trust X more than other social media platforms,” he said.

X has also introduced other changes since its rebranding, such as allowing longer posts, removing character limits, adding more customization options, and implementing stricter moderation policies. David Cohen, a social media analyst, said that X is breaking away from Twitter’s free-for-all rules that have led to widespread misinformation, harassment, and abuse. “X is trying to create a more civil and respectful online community, where users have to pay a price for their words,” he said.

Sarah Frier, a Bloomberg journalist, said that Not a Bot is an interesting experiment that could have implications for the future of social media monetization. “It could also help X differentiate itself from other platforms that rely on advertising revenue and user data,” she said.

X’s test program is expected to last for six months, after which it will evaluate the results and decide whether to expand it to other markets or not. The question remains: will X’s bold move pay off or backfire?
