Woodstock 1969: The Legendary Festival That Rocked The World

    Published on

Fifty years ago, a music festival took place that changed the history of rock and roll. It was Woodstock, a three-day event that featured 32 acts and attracted an estimated 400,000 people. The festival was held on a farm in Bethel, New York, from August 15 to 18, 1969. It was a celebration of peace, love, and harmony among the youth and the counterculture movement.

The ticket prices for Woodstock were $6.50 for one day, $13 for two days, and $18 for three days, equivalent to about $45, $90, and $125 in 2019. However, many fans attended for free, as the organizers failed to build fences and ticket booths due to the overwhelming crowd. The festival also faced challenges such as bad weather, traffic jams, food shortages, and medical emergencies. Despite these difficulties, Woodstock was a success in terms of the quality and diversity of the music, the spirit and behavior of the audience, and the impact and legacy of the event.

The performers at Woodstock included some of the most famous and influential artists of the time, such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, Santana, Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and many more. They played a variety of genres, such as rock, folk, blues, soul, jazz, and psychedelic. Some of the performances became legendary, such as Hendrix’s rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, The Who’s “See Me, Feel Me”, and Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice”. The performers were paid a total of $139,825, with Hendrix being the highest-paid at $18,000. Some of them later became more famous and wealthy, such as Santana, who earned $750 at Woodstock but had a net worth of $40 million in 2019.

The audience at Woodstock was mostly young people who shared a common vision of a more peaceful and tolerant world. They came from different backgrounds and regions, but they bonded over their love of music and their rejection of the mainstream culture. They endured the hardships and inconveniences of the festival with patience and cooperation. They also enjoyed the freedom and creativity of the festival atmosphere, which included art installations, yoga sessions, meditation workshops, and drug use. They expressed their feelings and opinions through slogans, signs, clothing, and body painting.

The impact of Woodstock was immense and lasting. It was not just a concert. It was a social phenomenon. It was a musical phenomenon. It was a political phenomenon. It was a cultural phenomenon. As Michael Lang, co-creator of Woodstock said: “Woodstock was not just a concert. It was a social phenomenon. It was a musical phenomenon. It was a political phenomenon. It was a cultural phenomenon.” Woodstock influenced the music industry by showing the power and potential of live music events. It influenced the culture by inspiring generations of artists, activists, and movements. It influenced the politics by challenging the status quo and demanding change.

Woodstock also spawned many myths and controversies over the years. Some of them are true, such as the fact that two people died at the festival (one from a drug overdose and one from being run over by a tractor). Some of them are false or exaggerated, such as the rumor that Charles Manson planned to attack the festival or that Bob Dylan snubbed the festival because he disliked hippies. Some of them are debatable or subjective, such as whether Woodstock represented the peak or the end of the 1960s counterculture or whether it was a utopian or dystopian experience.

Woodstock remains one of the most iconic and memorable events in music history. It has been commemorated in various ways over the decades, such as documentaries, books, songs, albums, festivals, museums, and monuments. The most recent attempt to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock was Woodstock 50, a planned festival that was supposed to be held on August 16-18, 2019. However, it was cancelled due to various legal and logistical issues.

Woodstock still resonates with many people today who admire its ideals and achievements. As Joni Mitchell sang in her song “Woodstock”: “By the time we got to Woodstock/We were half a million strong/And everywhere there was song and celebration”. Or as Jerry Garcia said: “It was like balling for the first time. You can’t ever do it again that way.”
