Sound of Freedom, the movie based on the true story of Tim Ballard, an anti-trafficking activist who founded Operation Underground Railroad. The movie stars Jim Caviezel as Ballard, who quits his job as a Homeland Security agent to rescue children from sex trafficking rings around the world. The movie was distributed by Angel Studios, the same company that distributed The Chosen, a popular series about the life of Jesus.

The movie has also sparked controversy and criticism from various sources, including mainstream theaters, anti-trafficking experts, and film critics. Some have accused the movie of portraying a sensationalized and inaccurate version of child trafficking that does not reflect the reality and complexity of the issue. Others have questioned the credibility and motives of Ballard and his organization, which have been linked to conspiracy theories and allegations of embellishment and exploitation.
Erin Albright, an attorney who has worked in the anti-trafficking space for 15 years, including as a former fellow for the Department of Justice’s anti-trafficking task force, says Sound of Freedom is “grounded in this sensational perspective of what child trafficking would be,” rather than reflecting its grim reality. She says she has been on four different group texts about the movie with other experts who share her concerns. She worries that the movie could harm the real victims and survivors of trafficking by creating false perceptions, stereotypes, and expectations.
Nick Allen, a film critic for Roger Ebert, calls Sound of Freedom a “solemn, drawn-out bore with a not particularly bold narrative stance.” He says the movie is more concerned with being something “important” than being a movie. He also criticizes the movie for its lack of nuance, subtlety, and tension, and for its one-dimensional characters and villains.
On the other hand, some have praised the movie for its powerful performances and its message. MOVIEGUIDE®, a Christian media review website, says that the movie is incredible, gripping, and heartbreaking, but hope-giving. It also says that the movie has a strong Christian moral that sheds light on the need for strong men and women to stand up for God’s children around the world who are caught in the vicious, abusive system of human trafficking. However, it advises strong and extreme caution for the movie’s mature subject matter.
Not the Bee, a conservative news and satire website, says that Sound of Freedom’s success is totally deserved. It says that Sound of Freedom is a high-quality film with an unbeatable message. It also defends Ballard and his organization from the criticisms and controversies they have faced.
Sound of Freedom is a movie that has stirred up emotions and opinions among audiences and critics alike. Whether it is a hit or a myth, it is certainly a topic of conversation in the entertainment world.
