A 17-year-old high school student in Las Vegas died on November 9, 2023, after being brutally beaten by a group of eight teenagers over a wireless headphone and a vape pen. The victim, Jonathan Lewis, was trying to help his friend who was being attacked by the group on October 30, 2023, near Desert Oasis High School.
Lewis suffered severe brain injuries and was declared brain dead on November 2. He died after his family decided to take him off life support. His mother, Jennifer Lewis, said he was “just trying to help his friend” and that “it cost him his life.”
The eight suspects, who are between 13 and 17 years old, were arrested and will be charged with murder. They are being held at the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center.
Lewis was remembered as a kind and compassionate person who always stood up for others. He was involved in several school clubs and activities, and had aspirations to become a lawyer. His aunt, Crystal McGrath, said he was “the most amazing, smart, funny, loving, caring young man” and that “he had a heart of gold.” His principal, Kelly O’Rourke, said he was “a leader” and “somebody that was going to make a difference in this world.”
The Clark County School District Superintendent Jesus Jara expressed his condolences to Lewis’s family and friends, and said he was “devastated by the loss of Jonathan Lewis.” He also said he was “saddened by the actions of the young people involved in this tragic incident” and that he hoped “that justice will be served.”
