Hollywood power couple Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw have demonstrated their generosity and support for the writers and actors on strike since May 2023. The renowned director and his actress wife have contributed $1.5 million to assist the strikers in dealing with the financial and emotional difficulties they are encountering.
The donation has been split between the Entertainment Community Fund and the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program, which provide financial aid and mental health support to the affected workers. The money will be used to cover expenses such as rent, utilities, food, medical bills, and counseling.
The strike has disrupted the production of many films and TV shows, causing losses for the entertainment industry and uncertainty for the fans. The strikers are demanding better pay and working conditions from the studios, such as higher residuals, fair compensation for streaming services, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and protection from harassment and abuse.
Actors including Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman and Ryan Reynolds have each made donations of $1 million or more, according to a statement from the SAG-AFTRA Foundation on Wednesday.
“I remember my days as a waiter, cleaner, typist, even my time on the unemployment line,” said Streep, a winner of multiple Oscars. “In this strike action, I am lucky to be able to support those who will struggle in a long action to sustain against Goliath. We will stand strong together.”
The negotiations between the Writers Guild of America, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have been stalled for months, with no sign of a resolution in sight.
Meredith Stiehm, WGA West President, echoed his sentiment. She said: “This is a historic strike that has exposed the unfairness and inequality that pervade the entertainment industry. We are not asking for anything unreasonable, just a fair share of the profits that we help create and a safe and respectful work environment. We thank Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, as well as all the other celebrities who have shown their solidarity with us, for their courage and leadership.”
Meanwhile, many fans have also shown their support for the strikers, either by joining them in rallies or by boycotting the studios’ products. Jessica Lee, a fan of Spielberg’s movies, said: “I love Steven Spielberg’s movies and I admire his generosity. He is a true legend and a hero for supporting the strikers. I hope that his donation will inspire more people to join the cause and pressure the studios to give in. I also hope that the strike will end soon, because I really miss watching new movies and shows.”
