Why Guinness World Records No Longer Accepts The Heaviest Pets Category

    Published on

The Guinness World Records is a name that many people associate with amazing feats and achievements by humans and animals alike. However, not all records are celebrated by the Guinness World Records. In fact, some categories have been discontinued over the years for various reasons. One such category is the “Heaviest Pets” category, which was discontinued in 1998 to discourage pet owners from overfeeding their pets for fame and glory.

The “Heaviest Pets” category was once a popular category that featured some of the largest and heaviest pets in the world. The heaviest cat ever recorded was Himmy, owned by Thomas Vyse in Australia. Himmy weighed a staggering 21.3kg (46lb 15 ½ oz) when it died on 12th March 1986 at the age of 10 years 4 months. The cat was so large that it had to be transported in a wheelbarrow. After Himmy’s death, the record remained unchallenged until 1998, when the category was discontinued.

The decision to discontinue the category was not taken lightly by the editors and record managers at Guinness World Records. They made this decision to protect the health and well-being of pets worldwide. They realized that some pet owners might be tempted to over-feed their pets just to appear in the book, which could lead to serious health problems and suffering for the animals. They also wanted to promote responsible pet ownership and care, and not encourage unhealthy practices.

While the “Heaviest Pets” category has been discontinued, Guinness World Records still monitors animal weight and size by breed. For example, they keep track of the largest breed of horse. However, they no longer accept records for individual specimens. This way, they can still recognize the diversity and uniqueness of animals, without putting them at risk of harm.

The discontinuation of the “Heaviest Pets” category is just one of many changes that Guinness World Records has made over the years. Other categories that have been discontinued include controversial animal sports, environmental challenges, and records that pose a threat to health. For example, they no longer accept records for the most kongming lanterns (sky lanterns) flown simultaneously due to environmental concerns. These changes reflect the evolving nature of Guinness World Records, as they adapt to the changing values and expectations of society. By discontinuing certain categories, Guinness World Records is able to ensure that the records they monitor and celebrate are not only impressive, but also ethical and responsible.

The discontinuation of the “Heaviest Pets” category by Guinness World Records serves as a reminder of the responsibility we all have towards our pets. It underscores the importance of not putting our desire for recognition above the health and well-being of our pets. After all, our pets rely on us for their care and well-being, and it is our duty to ensure that they lead healthy and happy lives.
