Meet the Mushroom Named After SpongeBob SquarePants

    Published on

A new species of mushroom has been discovered in the forests of Borneo, and it bears a striking resemblance to a certain cartoon character. The mushroom, officially named Spongiforma squarepantsii, looks and acts like a sea sponge, and was named after the popular animated show SpongeBob SquarePants.

The mushroom was found in 2010 by researchers from San Francisco State University (SFSU), who were exploring the biodiversity of the tropical rainforest. They were surprised to encounter a bright orange fungus that looked like a sponge, and decided to name it after the beloved character.

“It’s just like a sponge with these big hollow holes,” explains SFSU researcher Dennis Desjardin. “When it’s wet and moist and fresh, you can wring water out of it and it will spring back to its original size. Most mushrooms don’t do that”.

The mushroom is only the second species in the Spongiforma genus. However, it lacks the cap and stem that most mushrooms have, and instead has a sponge-like texture and shape. It also has a fruity smell, and can produce spores in different colors.

The mushroom is adapted to the humid and rainy environment of the forest, and can absorb moisture from the air to prevent drying out. It is also part of the rich diversity of life that inhabits the forest, and plays a role in the ecosystem.

“We think that all this diversity is necessary to make the forests work the way they’re supposed to work,” notes Desjardin.

The naming of the mushroom was not without controversy, however. The editors of the journal Mycologia, where the mushroom was profiled, initially rejected the name as “frivolous”. But Desjardin and his colleagues insisted that “we could name it whatever we liked”.

The discovery of S. squarepantsii is a testament to the creativity and curiosity of scientists, as well as the vast diversity of life on our planet. It is also a tribute to the cultural impact of SpongeBob SquarePants, which has been entertaining and inspiring millions of fans for over two decades.
