The story of Su Kong Tai Djin, often referred to as the Kung Fu Werewolf, is one that seems to be straight out of a fantasy novel. But unlike most fictional characters, Tai Djin was a real person who lived a remarkable life.
Born in China in 1849, Tai Djin was unique from birth, afflicted with a condition known as hypertrichosis, which caused his entire body to be covered in hair. His family, being highly superstitious, saw his affliction as the work of demons and abandoned him in the forest.
However, fate had other plans for Tai Djin. A Shaolin monk traveling through the forest discovered the child and took him back to the Fukien Shaolin Temple. There, he was raised by the monks and trained in martial arts. It quickly became apparent that he was exceptional in both appearance and ability. The sight of him practicing kung-fu, his face covered in fine fur, must have been quite a spectacle.
Tai Djin quickly became a favorite of many of the Shaolin masters, and as a result, each master passed their knowledge on to him. He was a sponge, mastering every technique shown to him. He became the first to master over 200 different empty hand systems and over 140 weapon systems. His various specialties included the infamous Chi Ma, or ‘Death Touch’.
After several years of extensive training, he became the first Grandmaster of Shaolin-Do and one of the first to master all skills of the seven Shaolin temples. He became known as Su Kong Tai Djin, with Su Kong simply meaning, Grand Master.
Perhaps the most amazing part of his story is that much of it is true. Su Kong Tai Djin was a real man, he really did have hypertrichosis and he was associated with Shaolin. Some have built and embellished upon his legend but the kernel of truth is there. Tai Djin was witnessed in the flesh by many, and revered by many more. He lived on for many years and passed away in 1928 after reaching a ripe old age and teaching others to be masters.
In addition to his martial arts prowess, Tai Djin also had a stint with Churchill & Taits Athletic Show in the Philippines in the early-1900’s and late-1920’s. Known as the Kung-Fu Werewolf, he was reportedly best-known as a Shaolin Master.
The story of Su Kong Tai Djin is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity and excel in the face of challenges. His life serves as an inspiration to many, reminding us that we are not defined by our circumstances, but by how we rise above them.
