Naughty Dog cancels The Last of Us Online, focuses on single-player titles

    Published on

Naughty Dog, the acclaimed developer behind The Last of Us series, has announced that it has officially cancelled the development of The Last of Us Online multiplayer. The project, which was supposed to offer a standalone online experience set in the post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us, has been scrapped in favor of focusing on more than one single-player title.

The decision to cancel The Last of Us Online comes amidst the company’s focus on more than one single-player title. Naughty Dog did not reveal any details about these projects, but said that the lessons learned from the TLOU Online project will be carried forward into the development of these projects. One of these projects is likely to be The Last of Us Part II Remastered, which is expected to launch soon on PlayStation 5 and PC.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered will feature a new mode called ‘No Return’, which is a roguelike mode that will challenge players to survive in a harsh and unforgiving world. The mode is inspired by the TLOU Online project, and will offer a fresh perspective to the game. Players will have to scavenge for resources, craft items, and fight against enemies and infected, while facing permadeath and random events. The mode will also have a leaderboard system, where players can compete with others and see how far they can go.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is not the only title that Naughty Dog is working on. The developer has also recently updated The Last of Us Part I on PC, making it Steam Deck Verified. This means that the game will run smoothly on Valve’s upcoming handheld device, which is set to launch in December 2023. The update also fixes various crashes, improves performance, and adds support for Steam achievements and cloud saves. The update is a welcome addition for PC players, especially after Naughty Dog confirmed it wasn’t a priority for the team around the game’s launch earlier this year.

The Last of Us series is one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful franchises in gaming history. The series has won over 500 Game of the Year awards, and has sold over 50 million copies worldwide. The series is known for its emotional storytelling, unforgettable characters, and suspenseful action-adventure gameplay. The Last of Us Part I and Part II are now available on PlayStation 5 and PC, and The Last of Us Part I is also available on Steam Deck.

Naughty Dog’s decision to cancel The Last of Us Online may be disappointing for some fans who were looking forward to playing online with their friends in the world of The Last of Us. However, the developer’s dedication to delivering high-quality gaming experiences remains unwavering. Naughty Dog continues to innovate and push the boundaries of gaming, and its commitment to its players and the gaming community as a whole is evident in its ongoing efforts to optimize game stability and implement additional fixes. These efforts are expected to be included in regularly released future updates.
