Ray Romano Says No to ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ Reboot

    Published on

Ray Romano, the star of the hit TV comedy series “Everybody Loves Raymond,” has made it clear that a reboot of the show is out of the question. The series, which ran for 210 episodes from 1996 to 2005, is a sitcom classic that tells the story of everyman Raymond Barone and the hilarious interactions he has with his Italian American family living on Long Island.

The show earned 15 Emmy awards, including ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’ in 2003 and 2005. Despite the show’s success and enduring appeal, Romano has stated, “As far as a reboot, well, it’s now out of the question because unfortunately the parents are gone: Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts”. Boyle and Roberts, who played Raymond’s parents, were integral to the show’s comedic elements. Their characters, along with Raymond’s brother Robert, often made unannounced visits to Raymond’s house, contributing to the show’s humor.

Romano’s statement comes at a time when many classic sitcoms are being rebooted to fill TV networks’ increasingly barren schedules. Shows like “Frasier,” “Roseanne,” and “Sex and the City” have all seen reboots or sequel series. However, Romano believes that the absence of Boyle and Roberts, who have both passed away, makes a reboot impossible.

Despite ruling out a reboot, Romano did not comment on whether a reunion special might ever take place. Such a special could potentially follow the format of the successful “Friends” reunion in 2021, where the cast reflected on the show and performed reenactments. In 2021, “Everybody Loves Raymond” creator and executive producer Phil Rosenthal said that he had pitched the idea of a special, but it did not materialize.

While a reboot of “Everybody Loves Raymond” may be off the table, fans of the show can still enjoy reruns. The show’s nine-season run has become a big hit in syndication, introducing the classic show to a whole new generation of fans. As for Romano, he remains active in the entertainment industry. He recently made his directorial debut with the comedy-drama “Somewhere in Queens”.
