Pope Francis Condemns Killing of Christian Women in Gaza by Israeli Sniper

    Published on

Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church, has expressed regret over reports that Israeli forces killed two Christian women in Gaza. The victims had sought refuge in a church complex, marking a tragic turn of events in the ongoing conflict.

The Pope, known for his advocacy for peace and justice, suggested that Israel was employing “terrorism” tactics in Gaza. This statement came in the wake of the deaths of a mother and daughter, who were reportedly shot dead by an Israeli soldier on the grounds of a Catholic church in Gaza City.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, provided further details about the incident. According to their statement, “The killings occurred around noon, when a sniper from the Israeli army targeted the two Christian women inside the Holy Family Parish”. This parish had been providing shelter to Christian families since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war.

POPE FRANCIS HAS deplored the deaths of two women in a Catholic parish in Gaza, where he said “defenceless civilians” were targeted by shootings and bombings.”I continue to receive very grave and painful news from Gaza,” Francis said. “Unarmed civilians are the objects of bombings and shootings. And this happened even inside the Holy Family parish complex, where there are no terrorists, but families, children, people who are sick or disabled, nuns.”

The Pope Francis’s words reflect the grim reality of the conflict. The number of Christians in Gaza has dwindled in recent years. Today there are only approximately 1,000 left, a sharp drop from the 3,000 registered in 2007, when Hamas assumed complete control over the enclave.“The 800 remaining Christians in Gaza are on the verge of extinction. They’ve made life very difficult for this community,” Mahmoud said.

After Saturday’s church attack, Italy’s top diplomat Antonio Tajani issued a “heartfelt appeal to the Israeli government and army to protect Christian places of worship”.“That is not where the Hamas terrorists are hiding,” he said on X.”Some people will say ‘This is war. This is terrorism.'” Yes, this is war. This is terrorism,” the pope said, describing the attack.

The Pope’s words serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of the conflict. Amid the political and military strategies, the lives of ordinary people hang in the balance. The tragic deaths of the mother and daughter in Gaza are a testament to this reality.

As the conflict continues, the Pope’s message of peace and his concern for the innocent victims in Gaza resonate more than ever. His words serve as a call to action for the international community to seek peaceful resolutions and protect the lives of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
