Bugs Bunny is one of the most iconic cartoon characters of all time. He’s smart, witty, sarcastic, and always one step ahead of his enemies. He’s also known for his signature habit of munching on carrots while delivering his catchphrase, “What’s up, doc?”
But did you know that rabbits don’t actually love carrots as much as we think? In fact, carrots are not a natural part of a rabbit’s diet and can cause health problems if they eat too many.
According to Mental Floss, the association between rabbits and carrots dates back to the 1930s, when Warner Bros. hired a group of young animators who would revolutionize the animated cartoon. One of them was Tex Avery, who created Bugs Bunny in 1940. But before he was Bugs, he was Happy Rabbit, who made his debut in 1938.
Avery was inspired by a scene in the film It Happened One Night, where Clark Gable’s character snacks on carrots while telling Claudette Colbert how to hitchhike. Avery thought it would be funny to have a rabbit do the same thing, and thus Bugs Bunny was born.
But while Bugs Bunny may have popularized the idea of rabbits eating carrots, he was not the first to do so. In 1927, Beatrix Potter published The Tale of Peter Rabbit, where the titular character sneaks into Mr. McGregor’s garden and eats some carrots. However, Potter also showed that rabbits prefer other vegetables, such as lettuce and radishes.
So what do rabbits actually eat? According to PetMD, rabbits need mainly hay, grass, and leafy greens in their diet. These foods provide them with fiber, vitamins, and minerals that keep them healthy and happy. Carrots are high in sugar and can cause tooth decay and other issues for rabbits. They should only be given as occasional treats, not as a staple food.
The Spruce Pets advises that the best way to feed your rabbit is to provide unlimited amounts of fresh grass hay, a small amount of high-quality pellets, and a moderate amount of fresh leafy greens. You can also offer some fruits and vegetables as treats, but make sure they are safe for rabbits and limit the amount to avoid digestive problems.
So next time you see Bugs Bunny munching on a carrot, remember that he’s not doing it because he loves them, but because he’s a clever and funny parody of a movie star. And if you have a pet rabbit, make sure you feed them the right way and don’t overdo it with the carrots. They may not say “What’s up, doc?” but they will thank you for it.
