In a recent outpouring of candid accounts, former developers from the Call of Duty franchise and Blizzard Entertainment have voiced their criticism of Bobby Kotick’s leadership and decision-making. The critiques come in the wake of Kotick’s departure from his long-standing position as CEO of Activision Blizzard, which coincided with the company’s acquisition by Microsoft.
Christina Pollock, a former programmer on Call of Duty at Demonware, took to Twitter to share her experience under Kotick’s tenure. Pollock accused Kotick of making decisions that negatively impacted the quality of their games and alleged that he once threatened an employee’s life. In an all-hands meeting that followed, Pollock recalls how she publicly demanded Kotick’s firing.
Pollock’s thread also emphasized the importance of senior staff taking a stand, as their position of relative safety can shield more junior employees who might feel vulnerable to speak out against mismanagement. She encouraged collective action and solidarity among workers, stressing the power that comes from unity.
Andy Belford, a community manager for Overwatch 2, echoed Pollock’s sentiments regarding the mismanagement at Activision Blizzard. Belford revealed that decisions made by Kotick, such as launching Overwatch 2 on Steam without additional support, placed undue stress on already overworked teams. Belford’s team had anticipated potential issues like review bombing and sought more resources to combat them, only to be denied.
The criticism of Kotick extends beyond just the internal operations at Activision Blizzard. Social media platforms are abuzz with discussions about Kotick’s controversial past, including alleged connections to Jeffrey Epstein and how his management decisions adversely affected Blizzard games in China, leading to their cessation of service in the country.
In January 2022, Microsoft revealed its bid to acquire Activision Blizzard, which came after a tumultuous period for the company due to reports of employee misconduct and subsequent demands for Kotick to step down. Fast forward to today, more than two years later, Activision Blizzard is set to begin the new year under entirely new leadership.
