“Hogwarts Legacy Conquers the Wizarding World with Record-Breaking 22 Million Sales in 2023”

The enchantment of Hogwarts Legacy seems to have cast a spell over the gaming community, with Warner Bros. Games announcing the magical milestone of 22 million copies sold in 2023. The Harry Potter spinoff game, developed by Avalanche Software, has not only seized the hearts of Potterheads but also the crown for the best-selling game of the year, an achievement that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad confirmed when speaking with Variety.

What makes this feat remarkable is that it represents a break from the norm, where annual chart-toppers are frequently dominated by sequels of long-standing franchises such as Call of Duty or titles from Rockstar Games. Haddad hailed the success, stating, “That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top ranks.” Hogwarts Legacy’s achievement is particularly noteworthy given the possibility, as Circana analyst Mat Piscatella mentioned to IGN, that it could topple 2023’s top game, potentially marking the first time since 2009 that a Call of Duty or Rockstar game has not topped a yearly chart.

The game’s journey began with its launch on February 10, available on most platforms, which gave it almost the entire year to accumulate sales. Reflecting on the game’s performance, Warner Bros. Games highlighted an impressive 707 million hours played, with gamers engaging in multiple playthroughs across different Hogwarts Houses. The engagement with the game’s content was extensive, with 819 million potions brewed, 1.3 billion plants plucked, 593 million beasts saved, and nearly 5 billion evil wizards defeated.

Looking to the future, Haddad teased more ventures in the Wizarding World, hinting at upcoming projects, including a Quidditch-themed game and “a series of other things” set within the Harry Potter universe. He clarified, “We don’t have any particular announcements on exactly how and when [the Quidditch game] is going to come to the market, but we are working to get it designed in a way just to delight fans.”

Hogwarts Legacy’s PC performance was also noteworthy, with Steam reporting it as one of its most-played games of the year. Not only has the game been a commercial success, but it has also left an indelible mark on the gaming community. IGN, in their review at launch, praised the game saying, “Its open-world adventure captures all the excitement and wonder of the Wizarding World with its memorable new characters, challenging and nuanced combat, and a wonderfully executed Hogwarts student fantasy that kept me glued to my controller for dozens of hours.”

The sales of Hogwarts Legacy represent more than just numbers; they signify the enduring love and fascination for the Wizarding World, the potential of the Harry Potter IP in gaming, and a triumph for Warner Bros. in a market where they seek to establish a new cornerstone franchise.
