In a move that redefines the gaming landscape, Valve is stepping into the future by opening Steam to games with AI-generated content, albeit with a caveat – developers must play by the new rules. Adapting to the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence within the gaming industry, Valve has detailed fresh guidelines ensuring that AI-driven games on Steam are transparent about their content and abide by legal boundaries.
“After spending the last few months learning more about this space and talking with game developers, we are making changes to how we handle games that use AI technology,” Valve expressed in an official statement, indicating a shift in its earlier hesitant stance regarding AI content.
To facilitate this inclusion, Valve is introducing an “AI disclosure” section in the Content Survey developers must complete when submitting games. This addition segments AI usage into two primary categories: Pre-Generated and Live-Generated content. Pre-Generated encompasses content created via AI tools during development, including assets like art, code, or sound. Here, developers pledge that their game harbors nothing illegal or infringing and aligns with marketed representations. Valve assures that the scrutiny of AI-generated material will match the rigor applied to all other content.
The Live-Generated category, more dynamic in nature, involves content spawned by AI tools in real-time as the game operates. This warrants an extra layer of precaution. Developers must elucidate the safeguards placed around their AI to prevent the generation of illegal content. Steam’s update includes a new tool empowering players to flag questionable Live-Generated AI content effortlessly within games, signaling Valve’s commitment to a responsible gaming environment.
Moreover, to ensure informed consumer choices, much of the AI disclosure provided by developers will be displayed on a game’s Steam store page. Transparency is key, and Valve wants players to have a clear understanding of how AI is integrated within the games they purchase.
Valve has candidly apologized for the delay in establishing these parameters, acknowledging the complexity of navigating legal and ethical concerns associated with AI. “We don’t feel like we serve our players or developer partners by rushing into decisions that have this much complexity,” Valve admitted, emphasizing a deliberate approach over haste.
Despite the progressive stance on AI-generated content, Valve draws a firm line against Adult Only Sexual Content created with Live-Generated AI, citing current inability to release such content.
