Despite their growing popularity as a purportedly safer smoking alternative, nicotine-free vapes may not be as harmless as many users believe. A recent study by Anglia Ruskin University has shone a new light on the potential health risks of vaping, even when nicotine is absent from the equation.
The study, published in the journal Microvascular Research, highlights how vaping fluids can induce lung damage akin to the injuries seen in patients with lung injury. This groundbreaking research unveils the harmful effects of e-cigarettes on the lungs, revealing a complex cascade of detrimental pathways, even in the absence of nicotine.
With nearly five million vapers in the UK alone, the increase from approximately 700,000 in 2012 underscores the urgency of understanding vaping’s health implications. The market’s lack of regulation further complicates the issue, making it challenging to pinpoint which specific chemicals are wreaking havoc on vascular function.
The culprit identified in the Anglia Ruskin study is ARF6, a protein previously not associated with smoking or lung injury. Surprisingly, ARF6 plays a central role in regulating the damage to the pulmonary microvasculature, indicating a new target for future research into the health effects of vaping. Lead author Dr. Havovi Chichger, Associate Professor of Biomedical Science at ARU, articulates the gravity of their findings: “Nicotine-free vape fluid exposure causes similar pro-oxidant and pro-inflammatory effects on human microvascular endothelial cells, and that ARF6 is a key regulator in vape-induced damage to blood vessels.”
The study’s methodology involved exposing a human lung model in vitro to vape fluid at varying concentrations, including one without nicotine. All the fluids tested, including the nicotine-free variant, caused oxidative stress and inflammation, as well as the breakdown of blood vessels. This revelation has heightened the debate over the safety of vaping, which is often marketed as a risk-free smoking alternative.
The findings are particularly alarming in the context of the surge in usage of nicotine-free vapes among adolescents, which came on the heels of the ban on nicotine-containing e-cigarettes in 39 countries. These younger users are at risk of lung damage without any awareness of the potential harm they are inflicting upon themselves.
