In an event straight out of science fiction, the early morning skies above Berlin, Germany, were illuminated by a fireball as asteroid 2024 BX1, approximately the size of two wild ducks, made its presence known. This celestial visitor, originating from the cosmos, was predicted by Hungarian astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky just three hours before it painted a blazing trail through Earth’s atmosphere. The prediction and subsequent disintegration of the asteroid upon impact underscore a monumental success for asteroid detection and Earth’s planetary defense efforts.
The astonishing scenes, which were widely captured on social media, bear testament to the efficacy of international collaboration in monitoring near-Earth objects (NEOs). The asteroid, also known by its provisional designation Sar2736, was first detected by Sárneczky using the Piszkéstető Mountain Station’s Schmidt Telescope in Hungary. His timely discovery marks the eighth time in history such a prediction has been made, with Sárneczky himself responsible for three of these discernments.
According to the minor planet center, a cooperative of various observatories including those in Hungary and Germany provided critical observations, allowing for the accurate prediction of 2024 BX1’s trajectory. The center, supported by NASA’s near-earth object observation program, gathers data on space objects, aiding in the formidable task of tracking the multitude of celestial rocks that dart through our solar system.
NASA’s Asteroid Watch had flagged the asteroid’s approach, alerting observers to the expected time and location of its atmospheric entry. They confirmed, “A tiny asteroid will disintegrate as a harmless fireball west of Berlin near Nennhausen shortly at 1:32am CET. Overseers will see it if it’s clear!”
Remarkably, Sárneczky’s previous predictions included asteroid 2023 CX1, about the size of two Super Bowl trophies, and 2022 EB5, half the size of a giraffe, each spotted merely hours before their impacts near France and the Arctic Ocean, respectively.
Despite the asteroid’s diminutive stature, roughly one meter in diameter, the event has not been taken lightly. The field of planetary defense continues to research and develop strategies to protect Earth from potentially catastrophic impacts. A glimmer of hope in this domain has been seen through NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) Mission, which successfully altered the orbital path of a distant asteroid through kinetic deflection.
The asteroid’s fiery end over Germany did not cause any damage, having broken up in the atmosphere with some fragments possibly reaching the ground as meteorites. Meteorite hunting teams were quick to organize searches within the predicted strewn field. No report on meteorite findings has been issued yet.
