A common belief persists that a nightcap might help one drift into a more restful slumber. However, recent researches put this notion to bed, revealing that even minimal alcohol consumption before sleep can substantially impair sleep quality, particularly by affecting REM sleep—the stage associated with dreaming and memory consolidation.
One study has particularly drawn attention as it methodically investigated the influence of pre-sleep alcohol across three consecutive nights. It employed in-lab polysomnography to measure the effects and revealed that alcohol before sleep increases slow-wave-sleep (SWS) accumulation but decreases both the rate and total amount of REM sleep. “Alcohol before sleep increased the rate of slow-wave-sleep (SWS) accumulation across all three nights and decreased the rate of REM sleep accumulation at the start of each night,” the study notes. The results point to a significant alteration in sleep architecture, underscoring the detrimental impact alcohol has on the quality of sleep.
This disruption of sleep architecture was also highlighted by patterns of alcohol consumption correlated with subjective sleep quality, sleep duration, and sleep continuity in adults. For men in particular, higher alcohol intake was associated with poor sleep quality, difficulty maintaining sleep, and shorter sleep durations. Among the disruptive factors, snoring, often linked with alcohol consumption, was noted. It is reported that “the number of nighttime awakenings due to snoring was related to alcohol consumption.” This ties back to the suggestion that alcohol’s relaxation of the upper airway muscles increases resistance during inhalation, significantly impeding breathing and potentially triggering sleep apnea, a condition that further deteriorates sleep quality.
While the same stark correlations were not observed in female subjects, this was attributed to notably lower instances of hazardous drinking among women in the sample. However, the study did find that daytime dysfunction was significantly correlated with alcohol use among women, hinting at alcohol’s potential to degrade the restorative functions of sleep.
It’s important to note that the relationship between alcohol and sleep is multifaceted and can be influenced by an array of factors, including the amount and speed of alcohol consumption, individual body composition, and age. As an overarching trend, increased alcohol intake prior to sleep, whether low, moderate, or high, has been correlated with a decrease in sleep quality by 9.3%, 24%, and 39.2% respectively.
The findings suggest a more cautious approach to alcohol consumption in relation to sleep. They challenge the misguided use of alcohol as a sleep aid and emphasize the importance of understanding the substance’s true impact on the delicate structure of sleep. It becomes clear that the sedative effects of alcohol, while potentially helping with falling asleep, do not provide the benefits of a restful night.
