Scientists have announced the discovery of at least four new deep-sea octopus species in the Pacific waters off the coast of Costa Rica, encountered during two expeditions led by international teams on the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s R/V Falkor (too). These expeditions, which took place in 2023, revealed octopus nurseries around hydrothermal springs—a finding that contributes significantly to our understanding of deep-sea biodiversity.
The researchers, including Dr. Beth Orcutt of the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences and Dr. Jorge Cortés of the University of Costa Rica, uncovered these novel species in an area of roughly 100 square miles. Among the discoveries, one of the new species has been endearingly named the Dorado Octopus, found brooding its eggs near a small outcrop unofficially called El Dorado Hill. This species is a relative to the Muusoctopus, similar to another species found at California’s Davidson Seamount in 2018.
Brooding mother octopuses were observed curled with tentacles and suckers facing out, a posture believed to be a defensive mechanism. These findings are notable because it highlights the adaptation of the Muusoctopus genus to brood their eggs in the warm, mineral-rich waters of hydrothermal vents, offering protection and a suitable environment for their young.
These expeditions not only focused on octopuses but also revealed a bustling skate nursery dubbed the Skate Park, showcasing the diverse life sustained by the hydrothermal springs in the area. The fact that these springs each have unique temperatures and chemistries suggests different geological processes at play, providing a rich tapestry of habitats for deep-sea fauna.
The scientific community is poised to gain a wealth of knowledge from these discoveries, as more than 160 deep-sea animal specimens collected during the December expedition are to be housed at the Museum of Zoology at the University of Costa Rica. This decision to store the specimens within the country of origin, rather than shipping them to the US or Europe, represents a significant shift. It allows for local researchers and students to access and study these specimens more easily, fostering a deeper understanding of their own marine heritage.
In their announcements, the scientists expressed hope that these findings will have a lasting impact on the comprehension of Costa Rica’s deep-sea ecosystems, and perhaps lead to policies that will safeguard these unique environments. The profound dedication to deep-sea exploration and conservation shared by Dr. Orcutt and Dr. Cortés has been instrumental in these successful expeditions.
