USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Strikes: Persistent Combat Operations Against Houthis

    Published on

In the searing heat and cacophony of an active flight deck, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, has been continuously engaged in what can be described as a Herculean effort. As the flagship of Carrier Strike Group Two, it has become the lead response against the Houthi rebels, who have escalated their maritime threats by targeting commercial and military vessels with missiles, drones, and more recently, unmanned surface vessels (USVs) in the Red Sea.

For more than four months now, the Eisenhower and its accompanying warships have spent every day at sea, without a single port call, defending against a barrage of assaults from these Iran-backed militants. The crew’s indefatigable spirit has been integral in conducting over 95 intercepts of drones, anti-ship ballistic missiles, and anti-ship cruise missiles and executing more than 240 self-defense strikes on Houthi targets. This includes the destruction of seven additional anti-ship cruise missiles and another explosive USV prepared to launch against vessels in the Red Sea, as confirmed by the strike group.

It’s “more of an unknown threat that we don’t have a lot of intel on, that could be extremely lethal — an unmanned surface vessel,” said Rear Adm. Marc Miguez, commander of Carrier Strike Group Two, where the Eisenhower serves as the flagship. The Houthis “have ways of obviously controlling them just like they do the (unmanned aerial vehicles), and we have very little little fidelity as to all the stockpiles of what they have USV-wise,” Miguez said. Despite the challenging conditions and unknown factors, the sailors and pilots have remained alert, with aircraft taking off and landing in rapid, meticulously coordinated cycles.

Captain Marvin Scott, the air wing commander, has indicated that the US Navy’s actions, including preemptive strikes on Houthi assets, have “significantly degraded” their capabilities, underscoring the tactical shift from defensive to offensive measures. Preemptive strikes have targeted to eliminate threats before they could jeopardize international shipping lanes. These actions signal a robust and adaptable strategy to protect the freedom of commerce and maintain the maritime balance in a region rife with conflict. “We are constantly keeping an eye on what the Iranian-backed Houthis are up to, and when we find military targets that threaten the ability of merchant vessels, we act in defense of those ships and strike them precisely and violently,” said Capt. Marvin Scott, commander of the carrier air wing’s eight squadrons of warplanes.

The challenges extend beyond the operational. The continuous combat operations have exerted pressure on the sailors, who rely on their commitment to duty and connections with family back home to sustain morale. The Eisenhower’s personnel manage to stay connected with their loved ones, a stark contrast to the destroyer crew who operate under bandwidth limitations. The mission’s gravity is not lost on the sailors: defending their crew, their ship, and by extension, international trade, against threats that could emerge within mere seconds.

The US Central Command has also played its part by interdicting shipments, such as the seizure of ballistic missile parts and USV components bound for Yemen, underscoring the multi-faceted approach to combat the Houthi menace.
