Lara Trump Suggests GOP Base Backs RNC Funding Donald Trump’s Legal Battles

    Published on

Lara Trump, former President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, has vocalized a sentiment that could reshape the GOP’s financial strategies: the potential for the Republican National Committee (RNC) to bankroll Donald Trump’s extensive legal fees. Her comments come as the former president faces a slew of legal challenges that could significantly impact his financial resources.

Lara Trump, who is poised to become the co-chair of the RNC following her father-in-law’s endorsement, expressed her belief that Republican voters would approve of the RNC’s financial support for Trump’s legal battles. At an event in South Carolina, as Trump’s supporters launched a GoFundMe to aid with his legal costs, she stated, “That’s why people are furious right now and they see the attacks against him. They feel like it’s an attack, not just on Donald Trump, but on this country … So I think that is a big interest to people. Absolutely.”

Her comments point to a broad perception among Trump’s base that the numerous criminal and civil cases he faces are part of a political witch hunt rather than legitimate legal proceedings. This notion, which seems to rally the former president’s supporters, underscores the conflict between Trump’s legal entanglements and his political endeavors.

With Republican voters potentially aligning with the idea of the RNC covering Trump’s legal fees, Lara Trump’s positioning within the RNC could signal a more aggressive financial tactic aimed at supporting Trump’s bid for a second presidential term, as well as bolstering Republican candidates in congressional races. She emphasized the necessity for a substantial fundraising effort, underscoring the urgency of rallying financial resources: “We need to raise about half a billion dollars between now and November 5,” she noted, making clear the dire financial needs of the campaign.

This comes at a time when campaign finance records reveal that President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has been outraising Trump’s, with the main super PAC supporting Trump’s campaign, MAGA Inc., spending more than it raised in the latter half of 2023. The financial pressure is mounting as Trump’s legal debts now surpass half a billion dollars, including a judge’s recent order for him and his businesses to pay $355 million in penalties in a civil fraud case.

Lara Trump’s statements have spurred discussions about the RNC’s role in funding legal fees, which remains uncertain. However, a spokesperson for the former president later clarified that “absolutely none” of the RNC’s funds would be used for Trump’s legal bills. Nonetheless, Lara Trump’s rhetoric suggests an eagerness among GOP voters for the RNC to step in, a move that might reflect the committee’s investment in the former president’s political future.
