Actor and comedian Ewen MacIntosh, known for his iconic role as “Big Keith” in the British version of “The Office,” has passed away at the age of 50, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and fond memories among his fans and peers.
The character of Keith Bishop, a Scotch egg-loving accountant with ambitions of being a DJ, became a standout in the series, with his deadpan demeanor and humorous scenes. Ricky Gervais, the show’s creator, paid tribute to MacIntosh, declaring him “an absolute original.”
MacIntosh’s portrayal of Keith, especially in the memorable appraisal scene from the show’s second season, was a testament to his comedic talent. Chewing gum and appearing disinterested, Keith’s indifferent responses to office manager David Brent, played by Gervais, became a defining moment for the character.
Stephen Merchant, who co-created and co-directed “The Office,” reminisced about MacIntosh’s talent: “He was so hilarious we started writing more and more dialogue for him. He soon stole every scene he was in. A total one-off. A tragic loss.” Merchant also reflected on MacIntosh’s ability to “steal scenes from Ricky Gervais or Martin Freeman,” highlighting his remarkable comedic timing.
Friends and colleagues have been paying tribute to the beloved actor on social media. Actor Miranda Hart shared her heartfelt remembrance of working alongside MacIntosh, and comedian Matt Lucas remembered him as “sweet and smart and humble and, of course, brilliantly funny.” Actor Rufus Jones recalled MacIntosh as an “absolute pleasure of a guy” and a memorable part of the Edinburgh sketch scene.
Beyond “The Office,” MacIntosh’s work extended to other British comedies like “Miranda” and “Little Britain,” as well as film appearances in “Finding Fatimah” and the recent indie horror “Nightmare on 34th Street.”
Despite his fame, those who knew him personally, like friend Ed Scott, remember him for the qualities beyond his screen persona: “Ewen was so full of empathy, kindness, and integrity and above all a really good man.” This sentiment was echoed by his spokesperson Chelle Just, which stated that “Ewen was a wonderful actor and an even better human being.”
MacIntosh spent his last days at Willow Green Care Home in Darlington, where he brought smiles to the days of the medical staff caring for him. The actor’s agency announced that there would be a private cremation for family and close friends, followed by a celebratory memorial service later in the year.
