Belgium Commits 200 Million Euros to European Ammunition Initiative for Ukraine

    Published on

Belgium has pledged to invest 200 million euros into a Czech-led initiative to procure artillery shells for Ukraine, a significant move as Western support becomes ever more critical in the ongoing conflict with Russia. The announcement comes amidst heightened concerns about a diminishing aid to Ukraine from Western nations.

    50 days this war, Ukraine

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, addressing the Ukrainian parliament, outlined Belgium’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression. “Three days later we are providing an answer,” Mr. De Croo declared, reinforcing his pledge with tangible action. Belgium’s investment is part of a broader European effort coordinated by the Czech Republic, aiming to deliver approximately 50,000 units of 155mm artillery ammunition to Ukraine.

The urgency of this aid is underscored by the dire situation on the ground in Ukraine, where Russian forces have launched relentless assaults, and military resources are becoming scarce. De Croo highlighted the immediacy of the need: “The priority is to deliver ammunition as soon as possible. That was Ukraine’s request.”

The initiative has garnered significant international backing, with countries like the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Canada joining Belgium in the purchase. According to De Croo, the ammunition will be delivered to Ukraine before the end of March.

In addition to the 200 million euros dedicated to the European ammunition procurement, the Belgian defence ministry will release a further 334 million euros for Ukraine, which will cover other forms of military aid, including ammunition from its own stock, medical equipment, armored ambulances, reconnaissance drones, and support for the F-16 fighter jet coalition.

While the commitment is substantial, Belgium has drawn a line at the deployment of troops. “No Belgian boots on the ground,” Mr. De Croo stated, positioning Belgium’s support firmly in the realm of material and financial assistance. This follows remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron, who did not exclude the possibility of Western troop involvement in Ukraine—a concept that De Croo did not echo.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the impact of decisive actions from allies in the quest to defend freedom in Ukraine and across Europe. The outpouring of international support comes at a critical juncture in the conflict, as Ukraine continues to repel Russian offensives, and the need for military aid becomes increasingly pressing.

In summary, Belgium’s substantial monetary pledge to the European ammunition initiative for Ukraine is a notable example of international solidarity. It reflects a broader European and international commitment to support Ukraine amid dwindling aid and escalating military aggression from Russia. As Ukraine faces a continuous and brutal onslaught, the delivery of this ammunition could prove to be a timely and significant boost to its defense capabilities.
