Michigan’s Uncommitted Delegates Signal Discontent with Biden’s Israel Policy in Primary Protest

    Published on

During Michigan’s Democratic primary, at least one, and perhaps two, “uncommitted” delegates emerged victorious, sending a stark message of protest against President Joe Biden’s handling of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. This result, although a small fraction compared to Biden’s overall win, showcases a significant undercurrent of dissatisfaction within parts of the Democratic electorate, particularly those with strong opinions on U.S. foreign policy regarding Israel and Palestine.

The “uncommitted” vote, led by progressives and notably backed by Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), the nation’s first Palestinian American member of Congress, reflected a deep-seated discontent with President Biden’s reluctance to endorse a full cease-fire during the conflict between Israel and Hamas. While Biden clinched the primary with an expected 81 percent of the vote, the uncommitted line still managed to claim approximately 13.3 percent, with a notable concentration in Detroit suburbs like Dearborn and Hamtramck, which host the state’s largest Arab American communities.

Activists and community leaders quickly hailed the result as a triumph. Layla Elabed, campaign manager of Listen to Michigan, pronounced, “Our movement emerged victorious tonight and massively surpassed our expectations.” The sentiment was echoed by Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, who said, “This is not just an Arab or Muslim issue now. This is an American issue now,” emphasizing the broader implications of the protest vote. He implored President Biden to “listen to us, that you choose democracy over tyranny.”

This protest vote not only represents a critique of Biden’s current policies but also serves as a preemptive signal to the Democratic establishment that such concerns could play a pivotal role in the general election, especially in a swing state like Michigan, which Biden won by a slender margin in 2020. The uncommitted vote in Michigan’s 6th Congressional District, including Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan, and the 12th District, represented by Tlaib, surpassed the required 15 percent threshold to secure delegate representation.

The implications of these uncommitted votes are nuanced. While they illustrate a rift within the party, they also serve as a reminder that the incumbent president must remain attentive to the diverse voices within his electoral base. Abbas Alawieh, a spokesperson for Listen to Michigan, emphasized the significance of their message, asserting, “We organized and over 100,000 Michigan voters last night sent a clear message to President Biden that he needs to call for an immediate, permanent cease-fire and he needs to stop funding the Israeli military’s war crimes.”
