Official media reported on January 1, 2024,in an assertive move that further escalates tensions on the Korean Peninsula, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered his military to “thoroughly annihilate” the United States and South Korea should any provocations arise. This declaration was made public through state media reports after a significant ruling party meeting and subsequent remarks to commanding army officers.
During the five-day party meeting, Kim Jong Un projected a defiant stance against what he described as “an unprecedented U.S.-led confrontation,” vowing to augment North Korea’s national defense capabilities. Among the announced initiatives are plans to dispatch three additional military spy satellites, amplify nuclear material production, and cultivate attack drones within the year. Observers interpret these developments as North Korea’s strategic maneuvering to enhance its bargaining position in potential future diplomacy with the United States.
In a pointed exchange with his army officers, Kim reiterated the urgency of honing “the treasured sword”—a thinly veiled metaphor for the nation’s nuclear arsenal—to safeguard against perceived aggressive postures by the United States and other adversaries. The official Korean Central News Agency quoted Kim emphasizing that the North Korean military must not hesitate to utilize “all the toughest means and potentialities” to deliver a “deadly blow to thoroughly annihilate” any opposing forces in the event of a military confrontation.
South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, responded to these provocations through the voice of its President, Yoon Suk Yeol. In his New Year’s Day address, Yoon pledged to reinforce South Korea’s preemptive strike, missile defense, and retaliatory capabilities to counteract the North’s nuclear menace. Yoon stressed the construction of “genuine, lasting peace through strength,” eschewing any form of peace contingent upon the adversary’s goodwill.
Despite the hostile rhetoric and the bolstering of military capabilities, experts suggest that smaller-scale military skirmishes along the heavily fortified border between the two Koreas could transpire within the year. Additionally, expectations are high for North Korea to test-launch intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of reaching mainland U.S. soil alongside other major weapon systems.
There are suspicions that North Korea has been supplying conventional arms to aid Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine, in exchange for sophisticated Russian technologies that could potentially bolster North Korea’s own military capabilities.
The size of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal is subject to debate, with estimates ranging from 20-30 bombs to upwards of 100. Despite the arsenal’s growth, many foreign experts maintain that North Korea faces technological impediments to developing fully operational nuclear-armed ICBMs. However, its shorter-range nuclear-capable missiles already pose a clear threat to South Korea and Japan.
