At a recent Harvard Institute of Politics event, Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) was confronted by a climate protester, resulting in an altercation that saw the protester thrown to the ground by an individual identified as an aide to the Senator. The incident occurred Friday morning during Manchin’s talk at the Harvard Kennedy School, where he was scheduled to discuss his decision not to seek reelection in the upcoming 2024 elections.
The confrontation started minutes after Manchin began his presentation, when at least six protesters from the group Climate Defiance interrupted his talk. They vocally criticized Manchin for his support of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, a 300-mile natural gas pipeline project in West Virginia which has been condemned by environmentalists. “You sold our futures and got rich doing it, you sick f***,” one protester called out to Manchin. This prompted the Senator to rise from his chair and face the protester.
An aide quickly intervened, coming between Manchin and the protester. A video of the protest published by Climate Defiance on their X account shows the aide pushing the protester out a door and onto the ground. It remains unclear whether the protester sustained any injuries during the scuffle.
Manchin attempted to engage with the protesters, asking them “to sit down somewhere so we can talk,” which was met with refusal. One of the protesters responded by saying, “I’m not going to sit down. You’ve received more funding from fossil fuels than any other senator.”
A spokesperson for the Kennedy School confirmed the disruption and stated that the Harvard University Police Department and the Kennedy School are investigating the incident. After the protesters were escorted out by a Harvard University police officer, the event resumed.
The altercation was filmed and the video has since gained significant attention online. Climate Defiance, describing itself as a “youth-led group using direct action to resist fossil fuels,” has been involved in similar demonstrations in the past.
The group’s spokesperson, Michael Greenberg, called the demonstration a success and justified their actions by stating, “Manchin… has shoved down our throats the mountain valley pipeline in the midst of a climate emergency.” The video has reportedly been viewed millions of times, highlighting the contentious nature of the encounter and the broader debate over fossil fuel projects and climate policy.
Senator Manchin’s office has not responded to requests for comment regarding the incident. Meanwhile, the broader Harvard community and those following US politics continue to process the implications of such confrontations between elected officials and activists, and the intense emotions surrounding the debate on climate change and energy infrastructure.
