According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ (IISS) Military Balance 2023, the IDF comprises 169,500 active military personnel supplemented by a reserve force of 465,000 individuals. The paramilitary contributes an additional 8,000 members. The military’s robust structure is designed to maintain Israel’s strategic edge in the volatile Middle East region.
The IDF’s arsenal includes advanced surveillance systems, 530 artillery pieces (self-propelled, towed, multiple rocket launchers, and mortars), 339 combat-capable aircraft, 196 F-16 jets, 83 F-15 jets, 30 cutting-edge F-35 jets, 43 Apache attack helicopters, and 49 patrol and coastal combatants.
A cornerstone of Israel’s defense capability is the Iron Dome missile defense system, operational since 2011. The system, developed with significant U.S. assistance, including a $1.5 billion contribution to missile defense in 2022, has been highly effective, intercepting over 90% of rockets fired from Hamas and other Palestinian groups in 2021.
Israel’s suspected nuclear capabilities further bolster its military strength. While the country has never officially confirmed it, the IISS reports that Israel is in possession of Jericho missiles and aircraft capable of delivering nuclear warheads.
On the financial side, Israel’s military expenditure stood at $23.4 billion in 2022, equivalent to 4.5 percent of its GDP. This spending per capita is the second highest in the world after Qatar. The country’s arms exports have also grown, with India, Azerbaijan, the Philippines, the United States, and Vietnam being the top purchasers of Israeli military technology.
The U.S. has been instrumental in underpinning Israel’s military superiority, providing more than $3.8 billion in military aid in 2023. This is part of a record $38 billion deal over ten years signed in 2016. Washington’s support includes joint exercises, technology development, and defense projects, with Israel being the largest recipient of U.S. military aid. Since 1946, Israel has received approximately $263 billion in aid from the United States.
Following a deadly attack on October 7 by Hamas, Israel reinforced its military presence near the Gaza Strip. In the wake of this escalation, the U.S. expedited military support, including Iron Dome interceptors and other munitions. President Joe Biden assured the rapid provision of additional resources to the IDF.
While U.S. military aid comes with conditions, such as the Leahy Law, which prohibits exporting defense articles to military units implicated in human rights abuses, there has been no action against any Israeli military units under this law.
Globally, Israel’s military prowess is recognized, with the 2024 Global Firepower index ranking the IDF 17th out of 145 countries reviewed. With a Power Index score of 0.2596, where a score of 0.0000 is considered ‘perfect,’ Israel showcases its military capabilities across various domains, including manpower, airpower, and naval strength, amongst others.
Israel’s strategic military engagement, combined with its advanced capabilities and substantial U.S. support, underline the country’s position as a central military power in the Middle East and beyond. Despite its small size, Israel continues to maintain a level of military preparedness and sophistication that aligns with its security needs in a region marked by persistent instability and threats.
