In a bid to safeguard the welfare of its citizens, India has formally requested the Russian government for the prompt repatriation of Indian nationals who were allegedly coerced into serving in the Russian army amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The call for action comes in the wake of harrowing revelations that Indian individuals, initially lured to Russia for employment or education, were forcibly thrust into frontline military roles.
The Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) recent raids across various Indian cities unearthed a sprawling human trafficking network. According to the CBI, these networks lured Indians through social media and local agents, promising highly paid jobs in Russia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal conveyed at a media briefing, “We have strongly taken up the matter with the Russian government for the early discharge of such Indian nationals.”
The urgency of the situation is underscored by the tragic fatalities of at least two Indian nationals confirmed to have perished in combat zones. The MEA acknowledged the difficulties faced in repatriating their remains, given the challenges posed by the locations where they were killed.
Amidst the turmoil, the Indian embassy has been attempting to address the issue for those who have reached out. “We remain committed to the early release of our nationals serving as support staff with the Russian Army and their eventual return home,” MEA’s Jaiswal stated. He further highlighted the government’s decisive action against the perpetrators of this trafficking scheme, with cases of human trafficking registered against several agents.
Indians forced to fight in the Ukraine war have made impassioned appeals to the Indian government. Videos circulating on social media depict the desperation of these individuals, who claim they were deceived into joining the army under the threat of long-term imprisonment. The Indian embassy, acknowledging the plight of the individuals, posted, “Mission will make efforts to send his mortal remains to India,” in response to one of the casualties.
The discrepancy between the reported numbers of Indians involved has added a layer of complexity to the already vexing issue. Security agencies suggest that the figures might be significantly higher than the approximate 20 individuals the Indian embassy has been made aware of.
The Indian government’s unequivocal stance and its diplomatic outreach to Russia reflect a robust commitment to the safety and rights of its citizens abroad. This case has also prompted a stark warning from the MEA, cautioning against the purported employment offers by the Russian army, emphasizing the inherent “danger and risk to life.”
