In her response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, Senator Katie Britt of Alabama took aim at Biden’s border policies by recounting a shocking tale of sexual abuse that, upon scrutiny, reveals a strategic omission of critical context. The account, featuring a young woman’s horrific ordeal of repeated rapes by cartels beginning at age 12, did not take place in the United States nor during the tenure of the Biden administration, but rather in Mexico between the years 2004 and 2008.
Britt’s usage of this narrative, as reported, sought to underscore what she perceives as Biden’s failed approach to immigration and border security. “We wouldn’t be OK with this happening in a third-world country. This is the United States of America, and it’s past time we start acting like it,” she declared, calling the current situation a “disgrace.”
However, independent journalist Jonathan Katz, through a TikTok video that has garnered significant attention, revealed that the victim’s experience occurred during the presidency of George W. Bush and not on U.S. soil. This revelation has spurred a wave of criticism against Britt for what some see as a misleading and dishonest tactic in criticizing the Biden administration.
Britt’s spokesman, Sean Ross, confirmed to The Associated Press that the senator was indeed referring to Karla Jacinto Romero’s experience in Mexico, and emphasized that “people are still victims of disgusting, brutal trafficking by the cartels.” Despite this acknowledgment, the approach taken by Britt in her speech has been challenged by critics who argue that it appears to be a strategic misrepresentation designed to draw a direct line between Biden’s border policies and the terrible abuses recounted.
The senator, in a televised rebuttal from her Alabama home, presented a dire picture of the country under Democratic leadership, touching on themes of danger and diminishing safety. Britt, who spoke of her own two children, warned that “life is getting more and more dangerous,” and described Biden as a “dithering and diminished leader.”
Her narrative forms part of a broader Republican critique of Biden’s handling of immigration, an issue that has consistently been a focal point of the party’s agenda. Former President Donald Trump, too, has pointed fingers at Biden in relation to a separate incident involving the murder of a Georgia nursing student, allegedly by a Venezuelan immigrant who had entered the country illegally.
