Angela Chao, the billionaire sister-in-law of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell and CEO of the shipping company Foremost Group, drowned tragically when her Tesla Model X, with its nearly unbreakable glass, plunged into a pond on her Texas ranch. The vehicle’s reinforced windows, a feature designed for safety, became a death trap after a reversing mistake sent her car into the water.
Despite desperate attempts by friends and emergency responders, Chao could not be saved. The Wall Street Journal reported that Chao had been driving home from an evening with friends when she accidentally put her Tesla in reverse instead of drive during a three-point turn. The car skidded down an embankment and submerged in the pond.
As the Model X began to sink, Chao made a frantic call to a friend, explaining her dire situation. A friend reportedly leaped into the pond in a gallant rescue effort, preceding the arrival of the emergency services. According to the incident report, a fire department crew arrived on the scene 24 minutes after receiving the call, finding the car fully submerged, with some deputies from the sheriff’s department struggling to stand on it during the rescue attempt.
Lighting equipment, dive teams, and a tow truck were swiftly deployed. However, the truck initially lacked a cable long enough to reach the vehicle, and concerns over potential electrocution delayed the rescue. Once the car was finally pulled from the water after a longer cable was procured, hundreds of gallons of water spilled from the vehicle. Chao showed no signs of life; despite a 43-minute effort by EMS responders to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The glass in the Model X, according to the American Automobile Association, is nearly impossible to break underwater, posing a significant impediment to both Chao’s escape and her rescue. In a typical sinking car scenario, occupants have only around 60 seconds to exit before the situation becomes critical. However, the reinforced glass rendered the chances of escape virtually non-existent.
This tragedy has raised questions about the potential risks associated with advanced vehicle safety features, and the incident is under investigation by the Blanco County Sheriff’s Office as a criminal matter until sufficient evidence can rule out criminal activity. In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office described the event as “not a typical accident,” adding to the complexity of the situation.
Angela Chao’s passing was met with heartfelt tributes from her family and her husband, Jim Breyer, a venture capitalist with an estimated net worth of $2.9 billion. Her father, James S.C. Chao, called her “thoughtful, kind, and devoted,” and a “charismatic and visionary leader.”
