House Republicans, who once fervently beat the drum for President Joe Biden’s impeachment, are now signaling a retreat, with many expressing doubts about the success of their own efforts to remove him from office. The investigation, which was rooted in claims against the president and his son Hunter Biden regarding corruption and influence peddling, has faltered under a lack of conclusive evidence. With the midterm elections approaching and the House GOP’s majority hanging by a thread, the political calculus within the party is rapidly shifting.
The GOP’s drive to impeach Biden began with high expectations. However, as Texas Representative Troy Nehls admitted to Fox News, “I don’t think we have the will to impeach Joe Biden. We just don’t.” This sentiment was mirrored by North Dakota Representative Kelly Armstrong, who argued against bringing a vote to the floor without the necessary support, emphasizing, “That’s not a vote you put on the floor if you don’t have a chance of passing it.”
The impeachment pursuit faced another blow when Colorado Representative Ken Buck announced his resignation, further narrowing the House Republicans’ majority and underscoring the challenging path ahead for any significant partisan efforts. Buck’s candid critique of Congress as “dysfunctional” also highlighted the internal strife within the party, as they grapple with the consequences of partisan approaches to impeachment.
House Oversight Chair James Comer, who has played a pivotal role in the investigations against the Biden family, hinted at a change of strategy. “At the end of the day, what does accountability look like? It looks like criminal referrals. It looks like referring people to the Department of Justice,” he said on Fox News. Yet, these criminal referrals are nonbinding and rely on the Department of Justice to take further action, offering a softer approach compared to the previous goal of impeachment.
While some Republicans, like Representative Nicole Malliotakis of New York, suggest leaving the fate of the Biden administration to the voters in November, others have expressed frustration over the direction of the investigation. A GOP source involved in the probe described it to CNN as “a jumbled mess,” indicating that not all members of the party share a unified perspective on the issue.
Amidst these challenges, House Republicans are exploring alternative avenues to sustain their scrutiny of the Biden family, such as legislative reforms to address financial disclosure and foreign lobbying. This approach, while lacking the fanfare of impeachment, could nonetheless keep the issue in the public eye.
But time is a critical factor. As a GOP source added told CNN, “The window to impeach is rapidly closing.” And with no formal whip count conducted, there is recognition within the GOP that there might not be sufficient evidence to convince the necessary majority in the House to back impeachment. One GOP lawmaker even estimated that about 20 House Republicans are not convinced there is evidence for impeachment, given the current House margins.
