Russia’s Admiral Kuznetsov: A Tale of Reliability Woes and Military Implications

    Published on

Once poised as a symbol of Russian naval might, the Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia’s sole aircraft carrier, currently stands more as a testament to chronic setbacks and military misfortune. Despite its intended role as a hybrid warship, capable of carrying fighter jets and helicopters along with a suite of anti-ship and air defense missiles, the Kuznetsov has become synonymous with unreliability and limited operational readiness, raising questions about its future role in Russia’s naval strategy.

Commissioned during the twilight of the Soviet era, the Admiral Kuznetsov’s woes have been a visible thread in the fabric of Russia’s naval history. In 2009, the vessel’s challenges came to light during a deployment in the Eastern Mediterranean, where it caught fire, resulting in the loss of a sailor and significant damage. The ship also suffered a fuel spill, adding an ecological disaster to its list of mishaps.

Seven years into a modernization overhaul begun in 2017, which sought to extend the ship’s service life by up to 15 years, the Admiral Kuznetsov’s fate remains suspended in uncertainty.“ The transfer of the Admiral Kuznetsov cruiser to the fleet after modernization and all subsequent state tests will take place no earlier than in 2024,” the Russian state media TASS reported last year.

The vessel’s engines have been a persistent source of trouble. Poor quality has frequently necessitated the accompaniment of other vessels for assistance, suggesting systemic issues rather than mere bad luck. Coupled with extreme corrosion below the waterline, these mechanical failures have placed the Kuznetsov at risk of becoming a maritime liability rather than an asset.

As of the latest reports, the situation remains dire. With Russia embroiled in the conflict in Ukraine, finding and training a crew for the carrier—requiring around 1,500 personnel for a modernized version—is proving to be a formidable challenge.

The problems don’t stop with the crew. The Kuznetsov operates on mazut, a heavy, toxic fuel that not only pollutes but has also rendered the ship infamous for belching out clouds of black smoke—a clear sign of antiquated technology and inefficiency. Boiler issues have been so acute that the carrier has been embarrassingly towed by tugboats, most recently in 2016.

In a twist of irony, the Kuznetsov’s STOBAR system—a cost-saving measure compared to the more capable CATOBAR system employed by U.S. carriers—while innovative at the time of design, now underscores the limitations of the ship’s capabilities. Its air wing, intended to comprise up to 24 fighter jets and 12 helicopters, cannot be fully utilized due to the ship’s operational challenges, undermining Russia’s force projection capabilities.
