High Attrition and Grueling Training: The Rigorous Journey to Earn the Green Beret

    Published on

The quest to don the iconic Green Beret of the US Army Special Forces is a grueling marathon of physical endurance, mental toughness, and unfaltering determination. A deep dive into the statistics reveals a challenging path with high attrition rates, particularly during the Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) and the subsequent Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC). This intricate selection process aims to filter out only the most resilient and capable individuals to join the elite ranks of the Green Berets.

SFAS, a preliminary 3-week course, serves as the gateway for aspiring Special Forces soldiers. However, data between 2012 and 2017 shows that for enlisted males, the average attrition rate stood at a significant 64%, while for their officer counterparts, it was slightly lower at 51%. More recent figures from a 2019 study indicate an even higher attrition rate of 69%. Fast forward to November 2021, and the numbers suggest a slight improvement, with a selection rate of 56% during an SFAS class, reflecting the fluctuating nature of this rigorous process.

The journey, however, doesn’t end with SFAS. Candidates must endure at least another year of training in SFQC, a comprehensive regimen that shapes them into full-fledged Green Berets. During the 2012-2017 period, the SFQC witnessed an attrition rate of 35% for enlisted candidates and 27% for officers, an indication of the intense pressure and high standards set throughout the course.

When combining the attrition rates for both SFAS and SFQC, the average for enlisted soldiers soars to a striking 77%, while officers face a 64% attrition average. These percentages do not account for those who drop out during preliminary training phases such as Infantry OSUT, Airborne school, or even before day one of SFAS.

The statistics from the November 2021 SFAS class are telling. The class saw an overall selection rate of 44%, with an attrition rate of 56%, highlighting the challenges candidates face. Notable reasons for attrition included physical performance on fitness assessments and run/ruck events (17%), land navigation (24%), and peer reviews (14%). Voluntary withdrawals accounted for 6%, and medical withdrawals were 2%.

The high attrition rates are partly due to the demanding nature of the assessments. A substantial 54% of candidates in a 2019 study failed to meet SFAS standards, and 15% couldn’t pass the Army Physical Fitness Test. Other factors such as medical conditions, loss of motivation, equipment loss, and safety violations also contributed to candidates being dropped from the program.

The selection process is not only a test of physical prowess but also of character and teamwork. With 14% of candidates in the November 2021 class being dropped due to peer reviews, it is clear that being a team player is as crucial as individual capabilities.

Despite the daunting attrition rates, those who aspire to become Green Berets continue to push through the barriers. It is a testament to their unwavering commitment and the rigorous preparation they undertake. Such preparation includes focused training regimens for weight lifting, rucking, running, as well as enhancing land navigation skills and fostering a strong team spirit.
