Amid the escalating tensions during the Israel-Hamas conflict, the U.S. Navy has showcased its strategic deterrent capabilities by deploying one of its formidable Ohio-class guided missile submarines (SSGNs) to the Middle East in November 2023. The Pentagon’s decision to dispatch the SSGN, a converted nuclear-powered Ohio-class SSBN, is a significant signal of support to its allies and a stark warning to adversaries.
The Ohio-class SSGN, which arrived in the Middle East on November 5, 2023, as confirmed by U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, exemplifies the U.S. military’s commitment to flexing its naval strike muscles in times of regional crises. These converted ballistic missile submarines, part of a strategic refit between 2002-2008 in response to the START II treaty, now boast a payload of up to 154 Tomahawk land attack missiles (TLAM), offering an unmatched combination of stealth, versatility, and firepower.
This conversion of the Ohio-class SSBNs into SSGNs has been a calculated move to enhance the U.S. Navy’s conventional strike capabilities. The introduction of vertical launching systems (VLS) in a “multiple all-up-round canister” (MAC) configuration has significantly expanded the missile carrying capacity of these platforms. Moreover, two of the submarines’ 24 large vertical payload tubes were converted to lockout chambers, enabling the covert deployment of Special Forces, such as the Navy SEALs, into potential conflict zones.
The presence of such an SSGN in the theater is a testament to the Navy’s forward-deployed readiness. These submarines operate on a 15-month cycle, with a 3-month maintenance period followed by a year of overseas deployment, ensuring they are available in theater for approximately 70% of their operational time.
The recent SSGN deployment is not the first time these submarines have demonstrated their strategic value. In March 2011, the USS Florida (SSGN 728) launched almost 100 Tomahawk missiles during Operation Odyssey Dawn, marking the first time a guided missile submarine engaged in combat
