Bloomberg reports, citing sources briefed on the discussion, that Trump “personally told Ramaswamy he won’t be his vice-presidential pick” but may consider him for cabinet positions.
Ramaswamy’s prospects as a potential Homeland Security head are said to be due to his immigrant background, which some believe could help “neutralize” criticism of Trump’s stringent immigration policies. Despite the pivot from a VP spot to a potential cabinet role, representatives for Ramaswamy have not provided immediate comments on the reports.
This development comes against a backdrop of controversies and legal challenges facing Trump, with looming criminal charges related to election subversion, retention of classified information, and hush-money payments, combined with multimillion-dollar civil penalties. Amid these legal entanglements, Trump’s former Vice President, Mike Pence, who experienced a tumultuous end to his term, has publicly decided not to endorse Trump for the upcoming election.
While Trump’s campaign appears to dismiss the speculation regarding potential vice-presidential candidates as conjecture, Jason Miller, a Trump adviser, downplays the discussions saying, “The truth is that unless you hear it directly from President Trump or his campaign, this is all BS.”
Allies such as Lindsey Graham and John Thune, prominent Republican senators, have reportedly advocated for Tim Scott, the South Carolina senator who initially sought the nomination but later professed his support for Trump, to be considered as a potential vice-presidential candidate.
During a recent conversation with Sean Hannity, Trump appeared somewhat lukewarm about Scott. “Tim, for himself, he was fine,” Trump remarked. “He did OK. I mean, he was OK as a candidate, but he didn’t want to talk about himself. He’s a very good man. For me, he’s unbelievable. He’s a surrogate.”
