USS George Washington Welcomes New Commanding Officer as It Embarks on a Strategic Relocation to Japan

    Published on

In a significant ceremony held on February 8th aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), the vessel witnessed a pivotal change in its leadership. Captain Brent C. Gaut, who skillfully commanded the carrier for over 3 years and more than 30 years in the Navy, officially passed the torch to Captain Tim Waits. This transition arrives at a crucial moment, as the USS George Washington prepares for a strategic homeport shift to Japan, signifying its upcoming role as the Navy’s sole forward-deployed carrier.

Capt. Gaut, a veteran of 31 years, remarked upon his departure, “Having the honor and privilege to command our great nation’s premier CVN has been the highlight of my career,” highlighting the accomplishments and deep camaraderie forged during his tenure. Gaut’s leadership was instrumental in revitalizing the crew and combat readiness of the carrier, especially following its return to the fleet in 2023, after a mid-life refueling and comprehensive overhaul. His time at the helm was marked not only by technical milestones but also by significant challenges, including a series of suicides among the crew that deeply affected shipboard life.

The incoming commanding officer, Capt. Tim Waits, a native of Anniston, Alabama, steps into the role with a distinguished military background, highlighted by his previous command of the USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) and extensive experience in naval aviation. “It is an honor to take command of the mighty George Washington as we prepare for a pivotal year to become the Navy’s only forward-deployed carrier later this year,” stated Capt. Waits, acknowledging the upcoming challenges with a readiness to confront them.

Capt. Waits’ career includes notable operational deployments and assignments, such as flying combat missions in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Southern Watch, and Iraqi Freedom. His expertise in naval aviation is further emphasized by his time at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and his work with the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV) as the Aircraft Carriers Branch Head.

The George Washington will soon depart for Japan to replace the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) as the only forward-deployed naval forces-Japan (FDNF-J) carrier. This strategic move is not only a response to evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Pacific region but also stands as a testament to the United States’ commitment to its allies and the maintenance of regional stability.

As the ship’s crew and new leadership anticipate the challenges that lie ahead, they do so with the legacy of Capt. Gaut’s tenure fresh in their memory—an era defined by resilience and the strengthening of one of the Navy’s premier warships. The USS George Washington, under Capt. Waits, is set to embark on a chapter where readiness and forward deployment will be the cornerstones of its mission, ensuring that it remains a formidable force in maritime security.
