Fulton County DA Fani Willis to Proceed with Trump Probe After Lead Prosecutor Resigns

    Published on

In the aftermath of a pivotal hearing regarding Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ capability to continue prosecuting a high-profile case against former President Donald Trump, the legal path has been cleared for the case to proceed. Nathan Wade, the former lead prosecutor, resigned following a judge’s decision that there was a “significant appearance of impropriety” due to a disclosed romantic relationship with Willis. Despite this twist, Willis remains steadfast, and the investigation into Trump’s alleged election interference in Georgia moves forward.

Judge Scott McAfee’s ruling, while declining to disqualify Willis outright, required a choice between her stepping down or the resignation of Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade. Wade’s decision to step aside has preserved the integrity of the prosecution and allowed Willis to stay at the helm. “I am offering my resignation in the interest of democracy, in dedication to the American public, and to move this case forward as quickly as possible,” Wade stated in his resignation letter. Willis, in turn, accepted it, stating, “I will always remember — and remind everyone — that you were brave enough to step forward and take on the investigation.”

Despite the legal hurdles, Willis’ pursuit of the case against Trump has not waned. The judge’s ruling has narrowed the focus back to the substantial allegations at hand, which Willis has charged as racketeering for the alleged actions in trying to overturn the 2020 election. Notably, four co-defendants have taken guilty pleas, which could provide a more streamlined path toward a potential trial.

As the proceedings continue, Trump has taken to his social media platform to express his views, writing that Wade had “just resigned in disgrace.” He described Wade’s resignation as comparable to the potential removal of Special Counsel Jack Smith, whom Trump believes should be taken off his classified documents case, suggesting it “should happen in the not too distant future!!!”

Despite this upheaval, Willis’ team faces the challenge of conducting a trial, possibly before the 2024 presidential election. The legal tussle has amplified the political stakes, with observers noting that the election clock is ticking and the ongoing court proceedings could intersect with the campaign cycle, potentially impacting its timeline.

Moreover, Trump’s legal team continues their efforts to discredit the case. Trump’s lead attorney in Georgia, Steve Sadow, has signaled an intention to fight on, believing that Willis and Wade’s actions, including their financial benefits and disputed timeline of their relationship, amount to prosecutorial misconduct.

The shadow cast by the relationship between Willis and Wade has sparked calls from defense attorneys for Willis to be removed entirely due to an “odor of mendacity.” However, the judge did not find that any actual conflict existed, only the appearance of impropriety, which will continue to be a point of contention as the case progresses.

With the resignation of Wade and the continued involvement of Willis, the case now steers clear of further conflict allegations. The investigation focuses back on the intricate web of charges relating to the alleged attempt to influence Georgia’s 2020 election results.
